VIEW VISITSCOTLAND.COM YOUR WAY
We want as many people as possible to be able to use our website. That means you are able to:
- change the colours, contrast levels and font styles
- magnify the page to 200% or more without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard or with the help of assistive technologies.
NAVIGATION BY HEADINGS
Use browser plugins or assistive technology, such as screen readers, to list the headings and subheadings on the page and go straight to the heading you need.
NAVIGATION BY LINKS
Users of assistive technology, such as screen readers, can get a list of all the links on a page and understand their purpose from the link text.
NAVIGATION BY KEYBOARD
Keyboard users can see the current interactive element on focus - such as links and form fields - through a visible change or style like a border or a highlighted outline.
SKIP TO CONTENT
Use a keyboard to find the skip links and jump directly to the main content on the page.
LISTENING TO CONTENT
Use text-to-speech browser plugins or assistive technology to listen to content you select with the mouse or keyboard.
Screen reader users can both listen to the content and navigate around the site pages and menus.
We are committed to conforming to Level AA where possible. This is an ongoing process and some content may not yet reach the standards in all areas.
We are currently undergoing a re-design of our consumer website, and as part of that re-design we are looking to improve both our accessibility of the site and the search facility for customers to find accessible accommodation.
We are also auditing our current website and working hard to fill the gaps in the areas that we know are not fully accessible:
- Most pdf documents and online eBooks on VS.com are not fully accessible to screen reader software.
- Keyboard navigation is available on most pages but still needs improvements.
o Forms might be difficult to use for keyboard users
o The sequential navigation via tabbing order might occasionally be difficult due to unclear visual clues on focused elements
o Some websites within the VS.com network have a poor keyboard navigation
- Videos are missing closed captions and subtitles.
- Colour contrast. Occasionally text on images and icons have low contrast ratio and might be difficult to see for visual impaired users.
- Screen reader users may find that some elements are not labelled or described adequately
- Facebook Messenger includes some accessibility issues, including tabbing order, issues with resizing, and naming of the iframe.
- On maps, product information cards cannot be dismissed easily after a user has clicked on a pin
- Occasionally links are not properly described on screen reader software.
- Some older applications, such as our product listings and product search pages, contain legacy accessibility issues:
- Missing form input labels
- Related form fields not properly grouped
- Some custom controls lack defined roles that would allow them to be controlled by assistive technologies
- “Skip to content” links not properly configured
- Some child elements are focusable but are not voiced by screenreaders
These issues will be addressed as we reskin our older applications to bring them in line with the new website design
