Discover the Best Gin Bars and Pop-up Venues in Edinburgh This August

‘When life gives you lemons, make a gin and tonic’ – this is certainly a philosophy Edinburgh lives by during the month of August, as festival vibes sweep through the capital and pop-up bars appear in all nooks and crannies of the city.

Here are a few ways to enjoy a delicious Scottish gin and have a festival to remember.

Gin-credible bars and experiences

At the Summerhall Distillery, join in a unique escape game as the producers of Pickering’s Gin will challenge you to solve the clues and save the distillery (which is a former animal hospital) during their event LockedIn the Distillery.

Or, learn all about the art of gin production with a tour of the Edinburgh Gin Distillery, and relax in the Heads & Tales bar afterwards with your artisan gin of choice.

This month, don’t miss a chance to visit 56 North’s secret gin garden or squeeze in a quick G&T between festival shows at several Edinburgh Gin pop-ups across the city.

Feel the festival vibes

There is so much going on at the Edinburgh Fringe, sometimes it’s tricky to know where to start.

This year, the festivals have something extra to celebrate – their 70th anniversary! For everything you need to know about visiting the capital during the summer festivals, browse our Guide to the Edinburgh Festivals.

So, why not try and catch a show that celebrates the wonderful world of gin? We’ve been catching up with the ladies from the excellent show ‘Mother’s Ruin: A Cabaret about Gin’.

For a proper gin pilgrimage, visit some of the distilleries where your favourite drinks are made. If you’re staying in and around the Edinburgh area, take a trip to Eden Mill near St Andrews in Fife (who make a Love Gin!) and a little further along the Fife coastline, head to the Kingsbarns Distillery to try the delicious Darnley’s Gin! In North Berwick, you can sip on the fabulous NB Gin – the distillery offers tours by appointment.

A little further afield, head to the Scottish Borders for a taste of the beautifully balanced Lilliard Gin and a tour of the micro distillery at Born in the Borders, while Strathearn Distillery in Perthshire hosts gin-making experiences and tastings.
