Instead of monks’ voices shall be lowing of cattle,

Getting to Mull & Iona

Ferry

All ferries carry vehicles and foot passengers and are operated by CalMac Ferries. Services are limited, so check timetables and plan ahead.

Choose from three ferry crossings to Mull:

Oban to Craignure – the main route, taking 50 minutes
Lochaline to Fishnish – from the Morvern peninsula, taking under 20 minutes
Kilchoan to Tobermory – a scenic crossing from Ardnamurchan, taking around 35 minutes

Once on Mull, Iona is reached by a short passenger ferry from Fionnphort, at the island's southwestern tip. Cars aren't generally taken across to Iona, so most visitors leave their car at Fionnphort and explore Iona on foot or by bike.

Coche

From Glasgow, take the A82 through Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, then the A85 to Oban for the ferry to Mull. The drive from Glasgow to Oban is around 2½ hours.

From the Highlands, travel via Fort William and the A828/A85, or take the scenic Ardnamurchan route to the Lochaline-Fishnish or Kilchoan-Tobermory ferry crossing.

A car gives you the freedom to explore Mull’s remote beaches, wildlife spots and coastal villages at your own pace. Roads can be narrow and winding, so allow extra time and take care on single-track roads.

Tren

Take ScotRail from Glasgow Queen Street to Oban, then connect with the CalMac ferry to Mull. From the Highlands, travel to Oban via Glasgow and continue by ferry.

Bus y autocar

Scottish Citylink services connect Edinburgh (4h15min), Glasgow (around 3 hours) and Inverness (around 3h40min-4h, usually via Fort William) with Oban, where you can continue your journey by CalMac ferry to Mull.

West Coast Motors operates bus services across Mull, connecting key villages and ferry ports. Services are limited, so check timetables and plan ahead.

Bicicleta

Cycling is a great way to experience Mull and Iona at a slower pace, with quiet roads, scenic routes and plenty of places to stop along the way. E-bike hire is also available on Mull.

FAQs

Where are Mull and Iona?

Mull and Iona are part of Scotland’s Inner Hebrides, located off the west coast of Argyll.

Mull is the larger of the two islands and Scotland’s third-largest island, known for its dramatic landscapes, abundant wildlife and colourful harbour town. Just off Mull’s south-west coast, Iona offers a contrasting sense of peace and tranquillity, with a short ferry crossing connecting the two islands.

When is the best time to visit Mull & Iona?

May to September is a great time to visit Mull & Iona, with longer days and good opportunities to spot wildlife, explore colourful harbours and enjoy the islands' beautiful beaches. However, each season offers its own unique appeal.

Spring (March–May): Watch the islands come to life with migrating birds and a chance to spot eagles, otters and puffins around Mull's coast.

Summer (June–August): Long daylight hours are perfect for taking a boat trip to Staffa and visiting the white sand beaches of Iona.

Autumn (September–November): Enjoy quieter days exploring Tobermory's colourful waterfront, with crisp air, golden landscapes and dramatic coastal views.

Winter (December–February): Experience the islands at a slower pace, with peaceful beaches, cosy cafés and atmospheric visits to historic attractions such as Iona Abbey.

How long should I stay on Mull and Iona?

We recommend spending at least 3–5 days to experience the islands fully. This gives you time to explore Tobermory, discover Iona’s historic sites, enjoy wildlife experiences, take boat trips and visit some of the islands’ beaches and walking routes.

Do I need a car to explore Mull and Iona?

A car gives you the greatest flexibility for exploring Mull and visiting the beaches, viewpoints and more remote corners, but it’s not essential. You can easily discover the island using buses, walking routes and organised tours.

Buses by West Coast Motors connect key locations across Mull including Craignure, Tobermory and Fionnphort. Bus services are less frequent than on the mainland, so it's a good idea to plan ahead and allow extra time between connections.

The island is larger than many expect, as the journey from Tobermory in the north to Fionnphort in the south-west can take around two hours, so plan your routes and allow extra time.

If you’re driving, make sure you’re familiar and comfortable with single-track roads and passing places. If you’re visiting from outside Scotland, read our handy guide to driving in Scotland before you travel.

Iona is largely car-free, with only residents’ and essential service vehicles allowed, so leave your car on Mull and board the ferry as a foot passenger.

Should I book my ferry in advance?

Yes. Ferry spaces can fill up quickly, particularly during spring and summer, so it’s best to book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. This applies to vehicles and foot passengers.

During winter, ferry services generally operate on reduced timetables, so always check sailing times before travelling.

What happens if the weather affects my ferry?

Weather conditions can occasionally affect ferry services, particularly during periods of strong winds or rough seas.

Before travelling, check the latest CalMac service updates and consider travel insurance for additional peace of mind.

Where can I stay on Mull & Iona?

From luxury hotels and welcoming B&Bs to self-catering cottages, campsites and hostels, there are accommodation options to suit every type of trip.

Mull offers the widest choice, with stays in Tobermory’s colourful harbour and remote coastal retreats. Iona has a smaller selection of accommodation, offering a chance to experience the island’s calm atmosphere long after day visitors have left.
