Forest walks and autumn colour
Take a stroll through Faskally Forest, where well-marked paths loop through mixed woodland ablaze with autumnal colour, or follow the riverside path along the Linn of Tummel for more spectacular foliage alongside sightings of red squirrels, otters and kingfishers. Nearby, the River Tummel, the Loch of the Lowes Circuit at Loch Dunmore and trails around the lower slopes of Ben Vrackie offer dramatic Perthshire scenery without committing to a full mountain hike. For iconic views, a walk or short drive to Queen’s View rewards you with a timeless Highland panorama enhanced by autumn tones.

October also sees the return of the Enchanted Forest when the woods of Faskally are transformed after dark with immersive light, sound and storytelling installations. It’s a favourite family tradition in Perthshire’s calendar which never fails to brings a magical touch to the October break.

October is also a great time to explore Pitlochry’s nearby attractions amid fewer crowds. Visit the Scottish Crannog Centre, where interactive exhibits and demonstrations bring reconstructed Iron Age loch-dwelling life vividly to life, or visit Blair Castle & Gardens, just north of Pitlochry, to explore over 750 years of history. After a day of exploring, warm up with a cuppa and cake at coffee shops and cafés such as Hettie’s Tearoom and Café Calluna or settle with a pint by the fire at traditional pubs like The Old Mill Inn or The Moulin Inn.
