The East Neuk, the perfect getaway – iris my case…

St Monans harbour, Fife

Finally after several years and various spin-offs, the original cast from American Pie are back on screens across Scotland in American Pie: Reunion. Quite unbelievably, nine years have passed since we first watched Steve Stifler (Seann William Scott) ruin Jim and Michelle’s wedding flowers and then go on to save the day…what a guy.

In similar fashion, back in Scotland, and more specifically Fife, a local hero by the name of Janet Williamson came to the rescue at a nearby film shoot.

Academy Award winners Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth were in the picturesque East Neuk to film scenes for The Railway Man, which is based on the best-selling novel by Eric Lomax. Filming for a wedding scene almost came to a halt when buttonholes for the character’s wedding went missing. However, Janet Williamson who runs Flowers By Janet, a church session clerk and the film’s prop buyer joined forces to frantically make up 17 white carnations that saved the day…well done Janet!

Why not head to the Kingdom of Fife and visit the historic Kirk in St Monans where parts of the film are set? You’ll find a whole host of things to see and do in the area.  If it’s more films that you’re into, why not check out blockbuster film locations used in Braveheart, Trainspotting and Harry Potter or explore the land that inspired Disney•Pixar’s Brave?  Firth probably won’t be sporting any spectacular festive knitwear this time around, but at least there will be some beautiful Scottish scenery to admire – I guess you can’t have everything.
