St Andrews Food Festival opens 2nd November

Jannettas Gelateria, St AndrewsIt’s The Home of Golf and site of one of the world’s best universities, but for me the jewel in St Andrews’ crown is B Jannettas, an award-winning shop selling mouthwateringly delicious ice cream. Indeed, Fife is something of a hotspot for us foodies, with two Michelin-star restaurants and the incredible Anstruther Fish Bar serving dishes fit for a (future) King – apparently Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall once tucked into a fish supper there!

Running from 2 November – 1 December, the St Andrews Food and Drink Festival offers a taste of Fife’s finest produce with a month-long programme including whisky tastings, poetry workshops, cheese and wine pairing classes and more. My personal picks from the menu include:

See How Gelato Is Made – discover the secret ingredient of B Jannettas’ success on 9 November at a free talk and tasting. Learn about the family business’ 100-year history, see a demonstration and sample some of their 54 flavours of delicious ice cream.

An Introduction to Scottish Gins – Scottish gin has made a comeback in recent years, with new blends such as Edinburgh Raspberry Gin (owned by the Fife-based Spencerfield Spirit Company) and the cucumber-infused Hendrick’s now on shelves around the world. Archie McDiarmid takes gin lovers through a tutored tasting of six of Scotland’s finest tipples on 12 and 26 November.

Surprise Surprise: Poetry & Haggis – if you think poetry and haggis is an odd combination then you clearly haven’t read enough Robert Burns! Alexander Hutchinson serves up some tasty words along with traditional stovies on 16 November. There’s an open mic session afterwards, so bring your own food-inspired poems if you feel like waxing lyrical about neeps and tatties or such like.

Namh-Jim Thai-Scottish Fushion Night – St Andrews restaurant Namh-Jim present a taster menu of Scottish dishes with a Thai twist on 21 November. I’m not sure what that will involve (haggis pad thai? Deep-fried Mars Bar green curry?) but with numerous awards and fans including Gordon Ramsay to their name, you can be sure it’ll be delicious.

The Chocolatier Experience at Balgove Larder – the Balgove Larder hosts a delectable evening by Dunfermline-based chocolatiers Hello Chocolate! on 22 November. Buy tickets online or at the larder and submerge your senses in this most delicious delicacy.

Has this list got your mouth watering? St Andrews is just a short drive from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee, so make sure you pop over and taste the finest food and drink from Fife if you’re visiting this month. Check the Food from Fife website for more information on this fantastic festival, and find inspiration and ideas for things to see and do, accommodation, events in Fife and more. Bon appétit!
