Our very own Shetland has been named by travel bible Lonely Planet as offering one of the seven best sunrises in the world. On a list that featured such exotic locations as Uluru in Australia, Okavango Delta in Botswana and Mount Fuji in Japan, Lonely Planet commented that a sunrise in Shetland offers some of the best views in Europe:
The remote beaches make the perfect spot for seeing the sun come up and we promise you’ll be in sweet isolation, untroubled by tourist hordes. It’s best to head here in early spring or late autumn for some sunrise action, as Shetland’s northerly location means the sun spends just a few hours below the horizon in the summer months.
2013 is shaping up to be quite a year for Shetland already. It started in January with a collection of photos featuring two cute Shetland ponies in cardigans that went viral to promote the Year of Natural Scotland. Not long after, Europe’s largest annual fire festival Up Helly Aa lit up the streets of Lerwick. In early March, Three released a humorous ad featuring moonwalking Shetland ponies set to a classic Fleetwood Mac tune. Just days afterwards, the stunning Shetland landscapes were used as the backdrop for a new BBC crime drama titled ‘Shetland’ which debuted on BBC One.
