Shetland Ponies in Cardigans – Photos & Video!

Shetland Ponies in Cardigans Images

Some rather striking cardigans have been seen on an usual set of Shetland residents – Shetland Ponies. Posing in their winter woollies, the ponies were marking the Year of Natural Scotland by sporting some rather plush knitwear that wouldn’t seem out of place in any trendy city hangout.

It’s safe to say both Fivla and Vitamin didn’t seem to mind all the attention their custom made attire brought them.

Preparing the photo shoot – a ‘making of’ video

The Shetland pony ambassadors from our photos come courtesy of Thordale Shetland Stud Centre, and are wearing jumpers made of Shetland wool created by local Shetland knitter Doreen Brown, of Shetland Collection. Photography by Rob McDougall.

Can’t get enough of these cute ponies? Here’s some more pictures:

This photo shoot alone has made me book a fortnight in Scotland.

  • Your Shetland Pony ambassadors are adorable. I have recommended Scotland as a place to go pony trekking in 2013. Naturally, I hope to go horseback riding in Scotland soon!

  • Kim Cockell

Very adorable. We are heading over to Scotland in April and looking foward to it even more now.

  • I have had a Shetland Pony (or two) in my life. How in God’s green did they accomplish getting cardigans on them and living to tell the tale? #ScotlandMagic

    • josiann

Ponies in Shetland are nowhere as large or ill tempered as the ponies in the states. They run wild and sometimes in herds. My friend and I being Americans kept running away from them while hiking but eventually figured out they were nearly tame! LOL! We never met one that bit, butted or bucked and none of them were taller than 48 inches!

  • Pony Boy

This is the cutest thing of all time. Kudos to Visit Scotland for their brilliant Pony Campaign. Somebody needs a raise.

  • I love this so much! Great idea!

  • missadventurous

News of these ponies has reached the united states here! I traveled to Shetland in 2011 and it was the best trip I have ever gone on…I have never been anywhere more beautiful and met so many amazing people while there. Including a few wild Shetland ponies! So glad that people in the states here get to see something like this and get to hear about the wonderful Shetland Islands! 🙂

  • Seth

Cute as all get out. But Dang, no Facebook Like button…

    • visitscotland

Hi Seth, the Facebook like button should be added now. Like away! 🙂

  • Amanda-Kate

Yes, I want the ponies and a trip to Scotland – NOW! That’s brilliant, they are adorable and yes one day I will get to Scotland (to do the whole family tree thing). But it’s a long way from NZ… sigh…

  • Shantiann

Hmmmmm, I wonder what Scotland’s immigrant rules are….can an American Lass move there??? If so, sign me up!

    • Troy 1st of Jockville

Well hi there Shantiann, immigration rules to Scotland are quite strict. Unless of course you are from any one of the growing number of Eastern Europe countries and are in favour of setting up mini Eastern Block States within the city limits. Or, a mature student from any number of African countries on a never ending fictitious collage course allowing you to hold down 3 very low paid full time jobs – all at the same time. On top of this, you will be able to claim more benefits from the government than our very own born and breed OAP’s and war heroes. There is another way though – send me your picture and I may marry you…I like to keep it old-school… 😉

      • Scabby McJockstrap the 7th

You guys have war heroes? Oh yeah…Ewan Mcgregor. He fought tirelessly for The Galactic Republic…although his own apprentice would bring about their destruction. So …not much of a hero in the end?!

        • Troy 7th of Jockville

Oh we’ve got war heroes alright, we’ve got war hero’s coming out of our crevices – Mel Gibson……FREEDOM !!! .…..enough said…!!!
The charm doesn’t end there either – just check under our kilts……we’re all hung like Shetland Ponies…!!!
And we live a long long time too, just check out Sean Connery…!!!

          • Scabby McJockstrap the 7th

I think thats more a perspective type thing…cos of the short legs you lot are afflicted with.

I love Mel, he has some very strong views about our long suffering jewish friends…i can see why you like the cut of his jib.

Sean Connery is immortal isnt he? There can be only one!

  • Jim Edmonson

So, what’s the music in the background?

  • Doudou

so sweet !!!!! kiss from France, cutties <3 <3

  • Jo Tonkinson

The music is Jim Leask and Bernadette Porter playing Busta Voe, Recorded and mixed at Thordale, Walls, Shetland by Richard Famous.

  • Canadian Knitter

The ponies are cute, but the sweaters are fantastic. Great work for the knitter. It must have been months of work.

    • SeattleKnitter

  • mo

Cute! Wish I’d seen this when I visited Scotland.

  • Lorraine

I would love to be on your Newsletter list but I can’t seem to register as I am in the US. I went to Scotland many years ago and am planning to go again. The pony campaign is brilliant! (And the cardigans are beautiful.) Amazing land, amazing people.

    • visitscotland

Hi Lorraine, you can still sign up to our newsletter through our US website: Hope you can visit Scotland soon 🙂

  • horsesaremylife

These little ones in their wee cardigans are just tooooooooo cute. Kudos to Scottish Tourism for the brilliant idea. I have one Shetland pony (Flicka) and a Miniature horse (Echo). Presently they wear little horse blankets/coats to protect them from the slight chill of a Vancouver Island winter, but wouldn’t they look amazing in sweaters like these. How do I order some?

  • Countryidyll

Superb sweaters. But what happens when it’s raining? Presumably they’ll stretch terribly and end up around the ponies feet!

  • Trude

Fashion Highland Style – it’ll be Luscious Lingerie for Lambies soon.

  • Mrs POTFER Sylvie

What a quentity of wool to knit these cardigans !!!
