Ja, we weten het - het is een cliché, maar de Hooglanden zijn echt zoals het Schotland in uw verbeelding. Het is een ongelooflijke mengeling van cultuur, geschiedenis, architectuur en ongeëvenaard landschap.  Denk aan grote luchten, fenomenaal landschap, fantastisch eten en zeer gastvrije mensen - het kan echt niet beter als u er tussenuit wilt en zich wilt ontspannen. Onvoorspelbaar. Ontembaar. Ongelooflijk. Probeer dat maar eens te overtreffen!

U kunt zich verliezen -niet letterlijk- in de majestueuze bergen en mysterieuze lochs wanneer u reist door dit mooie land. De uitzichten zijn gewoonweg adembenemend. Ga door het grootste National Park van Groot-Brittanie waar u dolfijnen kunt zien spelen bij de Moray Coast, verwonder u over het sensationele zeegezicht van de noordelijke Hooglanden, wandel in de schaduw van de hoogste berg in Groot-Brittanie, Ben Nevis, of ontdek de geweldige eilanden en stukken kustlijn. En als u nog nooit van Loch Ness hebt gehoord, het beroemdste loch van Schotland...dan zult u zeker verrast worden.

De natuurlijke speeltuin van de Hooglanden vraagt erom ontdekt te worden en deze regio is zeer aantrekkelijk voor adrenaline zoekers. Het is geen wonder - Fort William is genoemd tot 'Outdoor Capital of the UK'! (beste buitenstad van het VK) Gastheer van de UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, hier kunt u genieten van wereldklasse bergen of kies uit sportactiviteiten verspreid over de Highlands zoals vissen, golf spelen, kajakken op zee, wildwaterraften, ravijnklimmen, Munro's beklimmen, sneeuwsport beoefenen en nog veel meer - de keuze is aan u.

Het verleden aanraken

De Hooglanden zijn omringd met een spookachtige, mysterieuze lucht en de turbulente geschiedenis van deze regio heeft enkele van de mooiste en romantische kastelen ter wereld achtergelaten. Van Dunvegan Castle op Skye en Brodie Castle in Moray tot de Castle of Mey in de noorderlijke Hooglanden -  ze zijn echt zo magnifiek als mensen zeggen. Maar het gaat niet alleen maar over de kastelen, alhoewel ze fantastisch zijn. Leer over het beruchte bloedbad in het Glencoe Visitor Centre (bezoekerscentrum), bekijk het Glenfinnan Monument, een eerbetoon voor de Jacobitische Opstanden, of ga naar het Highland Archive Centre (het archief) waar u uw stamboom kunt onderzoeken.

Hoe er te;komen

U kunt gemakkelijk naar en rondom de Hooglanden reizen door gebruik te maken van het uitgebreide netwerk van openbaar vervoer en de wegen. De regio lijkt misschien afgelegen, maar dit mooie deel van Schotland is heel makkelijk bereikbaar en het is zeker de reis waard.

Vervoer

  • Of u nu rijdt naar Fort William & Lochaber, de West Highland Way wandelt of reist per trein met de West Highland Line, u zult ongetwijfeld genieten van het fantastische landschap dat Schotland te bieden heeft.
  • Geniet van een dag ongelimiteerd reizen door Moray Speyside met een Stagecoach Dayrider ticket, of ontdek de Malt Whisky Trail (whiskyroute) met de auto door de duidelijk aangegeven bruine en witte bordjes te volgen.
  • Ga over de Skye Bridge naar Kyleakin en volg de A87 naar Broadford, of ga aan boord van;de CalMac veerboot, welke het hele jaar door in dienst is tussen Mallaig en Armadale - beide routes zijn net zo schilderachtig.
  • Er zijn dagelijkse treinen en bussen naar Inverness, Nairn en Loch Ness vanaf Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Stirling, Perth, of u kunt deelnemen aan een georganiseerde bustour; bereid uw reis voor met Traveline Scotland.Als u reist van of naar Fort William, kunt u zelfs stuk wandelen op de Great Glen Way.
  • Fietsen op en van de weg af is een goede manier om naar en rondom het Cairngorms National Park te gaan. De;National Cycle Network route 7 en delen van de Deeside Way, Speyside Way en Dava Way zijn allemaal geschikt om te fietsen.
  • Inverness dient als een poort naar de noorderlijke Hooglanden met regelmatige vluchten vanuit meerdere plaatsen in het VK, of u kunt direct vliegen naar Wick John O' Groats Airport, Edinburgh.
  • Zodra u in het gebied bent kunt u het noordelijkste stuk van Schotland ontdekken met de brandnieuwe toeristenroute, de North Coast 500, Schotlands antwoord op Amerikas Route 66.
