Frequently Asked Questions

Is mountain biking allowed in Scotland?

No, mountain bike holidays are suitable for all abilities. They range from:

  • Beginner – gentle trails, instruction, confidence building rides

What type of bike do I need?

This entirely depends on what type of holiday you’re looking for:

  • Trail holidays – hardtail or full-suspension MTB
  • Alpine or downhill trips – full suspension bike
  • Mixed terrain/long-distance – trail or down-country bike
  • E-bike holidays – pedal-assist only

Is bike hire included?

Sometimes, but it’s not always guaranteed. Make sure to also check with your holiday provider if helmets and pads are included or whether you need to bring your own.

Where can I go mountain biking?

There are lots of options to suit everyone from first timers to experienced riders looking for big challenges. These include:

  • Purpose-built trail centres (e.g. Glentress, Laggan Wolftrax, 7stanes)
  • Forests roads and tracks
  • Natural singletrack in mountains in glens, only if you’re more of an experienced rider.

Where is mountain biking prohibited?

It is advised not to cycle in the following locations:

  • Private gardens and houses
  • Farmyards
  • Fields with growing crops
  • Paid attractions (unless cycling is allowed)

What do trail grades mean in Scotland?

You will only need insurance if you’re riding in technical or remote terrain. If you’re planning a mountain biking holiday soon, we recommend you bring the following items:

  • Repair kit, tools, spare clothing layers
  • Map or GPS – remote areas often lack phone signal

Can I combine mountain biking with wild camping?

Yes, you can combine mountain biking with wild camping in Scotland, making it easy to explore remote areas over multiple days. Just camp responsibly in small numbers, choose spots well away from buildings, roads, and farmland, and leave everything as exactly as you found it.
