Cycling in the Scottish Borders promises captivating southern landscapes, rolling hills, and a host of trails and routes for all abilities. Whether you’re a mountain biking enthusiast, a gravel grinder, or looking for quiet family rides, the Scottish Borders is an ideal destination to get out on two wheels.

Cycle routes

  • Tweed Valley Cycle Route – challenging, 95 miles: starting in Biggar and finishing in Berwick-upon-Tweed, this route takes you through the heart of the region.
  • BorderLoop – challenging, long distance, 190 miles: pass by romantic castles, ruined abbeys, and grand estates on this route.
  • Abbotsford – easy, 5 miles: this short and sweet route takes you around Abbotsford, the former home of Sir Walter Scott.
  • Tweed Valley Railway Path – easy, family-friendly, 6.5 miles: enjoy quiet roads, picturesque scenery, and quaint local towns along this path.
  • Cademuir Circuit – easy, 8 miles: soak in the open countryside and vast views along this family-friendly circuit.

FAQs on cycling in Scotland

Are there cycling events in Scotland?

Yes. Whether you want to participate, or just come along to support, there are many cycling events in Scotland to enjoy. Etape Loch Ness, Muck n'Mac Fest, Etape Caledonia, and Oban Sportive are just a few.

Do I have to use cycle lanes?

While you do not legally have to use cycle lanes, it is highly recommended to keep you and other road users safe. Most cities have designated cycle lanes to use.

Can I cycle on the pavement?

No, unless specifically indicated by blue signs as a shared-use path.

Are helmets mandatory?

Although cycling without a helmet is not illegal, it is strongly recommended to stay safe.

What should I wear?

As Scotland’s weather can change quickly, it is recommended to carry waterproof clothing, as well as extra layers in case it becomes cold. Sturdy footwear with good tread is also recommended.
