Cast-Iron, Casks & Coffins
A dram and a ramble make a dramble! On this leisurely walk, we take a closer look at the history of Aberlour, or Charlestown of Aberlour by its Sunday name, and the life and endeavours of James Fleming, founder of the current Aberlour Distillery. We will also hear about the cunning whisky smugglers and enjoy some of Scotland’s most beautiful scenery and an iconic landmark along the way.
Our walk starts in Craigellachie, where we will first admire Thomas Telford's iconic Craigellachie Bridge, the oldest surviving cast-iron bridge in Scotland. We then head along the mighty River Spey on a section of the Speyside Way, taking us to Aberlour. Here, we follow the footsteps of James Fleming, a grain merchant and Victorian entrepreneur. We eventually reach the picturesque Linn Falls on the Lour Burn. The burn used to be the water source for Aberlour Distillery, which is only a stone's throw away from the falls. We may very likely smell it, before we see it.
We highly recommend a tour of this gem of a distillery* and are happy to make the necessary arrangements. Alternatively, we take you to a cozy place where we will tell you a few whisky smuggler stories that even feature a coffin...
After a few drams and stories, we visit another legacy of James Fleming, the Penny Brig, and then retrace our steps to Craigellachie.
