Speyside whisky tours

Whisky tour of the numerous whiskey distillers in Speyside

You'll be chauffeured driven in luxury in a Mercedes E class, on your journey discovering the finest Scottish malts.

Nestled in the heart of Scotland’s iconic whisky region, Speyside is home to some of the world’s finest distilleries, each with its own rich history, unique flavours, and traditional craftsmanship. In fact over 50% of Scotland’s distilleries are based in Moray Speyside, with the region being best known for its Malt Whisky Trail. Dufftown is home to 6 of these distilleries, fondly being referred to as the Malt Whisky Capital.

Whether you’re a whisky connoisseur or eager to explore the origins of Scotland’s national drink, visiting Speyside’s distilleries offers an unforgettable experience for both its tastes and stunning scenery of rolling hills and picturesque glens. From world-renowned brands to hidden gems, these distilleries showcase the essence of Speyside’s whisky heritage.

They are over 50 distilleries in the Speyside region alone, below is my top 6,

1. Glenfiddich Distillery

Glenfiddich is one of the most internationally recognised names in Whisky, and as such offers an exceptional tour experience that showcases its rich history and craftsmanship. Glenfiddich is a family owned distillery that is celebrated for its distinctive single malts and innovative approach to whisky-making. During your visit, you’ll explore the distillery’s traditional processes, from mashing to maturation. The tour includes tastings their acclaimed whiskies and provides an unforgettable journey into Scotland’s whisky heritage.

2. The Balvenie Distillery

The Balvenie Distillery stands as a beacon of traditional craftsmanship in the heart of Speyside. Established in 1892, The Balvenie is one of the few distilleries that still grows its own barley, malts its own grain, and employs its own coppersmiths and coopers, making its whisky truly handcrafted from start to finish. Known for its rich, honeyed character and depth of flavour, The Balvenie offers a warm and personal whisky experience. Whether you’re sampling their iconic Doublewood or exploring one of their rarer expressions, a visit to The Balvenie is a chance to witness the artistry of whisky-making at its finest—an essential stop for those seeking authenticity and tradition on their Speyside journey.

3. The Macallan Distillery

The Macallan Distillery is synonymous with luxury and craftsmanship, setting the bar high in the world of whisky. Founded in 1824, The Macallan is renowned for its exceptional single malts, often matured in the finest sherry-seasoned oak casks. The distillery’s state-of-the-art visitor centre blends modern innovation with traditional whisky-making, offering an immersive experience that showcases its commitment to quality. From its smooth, rich flavours to its stunning architecture, The Macallan is a must-visit for anyone looking to explore this spiritual home of a global power house. Tours, Brasserie dining & Boutique.

4. Aberlour Distillery

Aberlour Distillery, with its rich history dating back to 1826, is renowned for its distinctive double-cask maturation process, Aberlour produces single malts that are both complex and remarkably smooth. The interplay of sherry-seasoned oak and American oak casks imparts deep flavours of dried fruit, chocolate, and spice, making each dram a delightful journey. The tasting sessions often feature some of the distillery’s finest expressions, including the popular Aberlour A’bunadh, known for its cask strength and rich sherry notes.

5. The Glenlivet Distillery

Glenlivet Distillery is a true pioneer of Speyside whisky, with a history that stretches back to 1824, when it became the first legal distillery in the region. Known for its smooth, fruity single malts, Glenlivet set the standard for what Speyside whisky could be, blending tradition with innovation. The distillery’s bright, approachable flavours—marked by notes of orchard fruits, honey, and a gentle spice—have made it a favourite among whisky enthusiasts worldwide. A visit to Glenlivet offers a chance to explore its storied past while enjoying its modern visitor experience, making it a must-see destination, not to mention the stunning scenery enroute for anyone journeying Speyside’s whisky trail.

6. Glenfarclas Distillery

Glenfarclas Distillery is a true Speyside classic, proudly family-owned since 1865, and one of the few multi-generational distilleries still family-owned today. Situated at the foot of Ben Rinnes, the distillery is known for producing rich, full-bodied single malts that showcase the best of traditional whisky-making. Glenfarclas is celebrated for its signature sherried whiskies, matured in quality European oak casks, offering deep flavours of dried fruits, spices, and oak. A visit to Glenfarclas feels like stepping back in time, with its warm, welcoming atmosphere and dedication to preserving time-honoured methods.
