Tam O Shanter Tour
Our Tam O Shanter Tour with Tartan Tours Scotland visits Alloway in Ayrshire where Robert Burns was inspired ,born and brought up.
This Tam O Shanter Burns Tour is brought to life as we wander the Auld Alloway Kirk, celebrated as the scene of the witches dance in Tam O Shanter
"Or catch'd wi' warlocks in the mirk
By Alloway's auld haunted Kirk"
Then its Brig O Doon, Brig is Scots for bridge hence the BrIg O Doon is Bridge over the river Doon. Built in the early 15th century.
The cobbles on bridge are cranked, which due to local beliefs would stop witches from crossing.
Brig O Doon is used as the setting for the final verse in Tam O Shanter. Tam on horseback is being chased by Nannie the witch.Only just managing to escape over the Brig as she grabs the horses tail which comes away in her hands
""The carlin caught her by the rump and left puir Meg wi' scarce a stump."
We also have the opportunity to visit the cottage that his father built and where he was born and raised. After exploring the cottage its a short walk through Poets Path. On the tour we also have plenty of time to see the magnificent Burns Monument, the gardens and explore the Burns museum.
All these Burns attractions are set and within walking distance of each other in the beautiful village of Alloway.
Additional extras can be added to this already great tour like a "Behind the Scenes tour" of the museum where you can see the original first draft of Auld lang Syne and many other objects that are too precious to be on public display.
