This Highlands & Islands tour will give you a glimpse into some of the remote and authentic locations in Scotland. Curate your route to take you across iconic parts of the North Coast 500, dipping in and out of the scenic islands of Skye and Islay.

Highlands & Islands: 13-Day Self-Drive Tour of Scotland

Day 1 – Edinburgh to Dunkeld

Begin your journey by heading north from Edinburgh through Stirling, stopping to explore the Bannockburn Visitor Centre and the towering Wallace Monument. Alternatively, travel via the UNESCO-listed Forth Bridge into the rolling hills of picturesque Perthshire.

Day 2 – Into the Cairngorms

Discover the natural splendour of the Cairngorms National Park. Marvel at its dramatic ridgelines, peaceful lochs, and visit Balmoral Castle – a royal favourite. Conclude the day with a whisky tasting in Speyside, home to over 50 distilleries.

Day 3 – Crossing the Flow Country

Venture deeper into Scotland’s northern wilderness as you traverse the Flow Country, with its vast lochs and towering mountains. Reach the Kyle of Tongue and follow a stunning coastal road to the remote beauty of Loch Eriboll and on to Durness.

Day 4 – Untamed Assynt

Explore the wilds of Assynt – a land of majestic peaks, white-sand beaches, soaring sea cliffs and ancient caves. Rich in wildlife and birdlife, this is one of the most unspoilt corners of Britain.

Day 5 – Along the Wild West Coast

Travel south along the spectacular west coast, where narrow roads hug the rugged shoreline. Stop in Ullapool for a relaxed lunch at an award-winning seafood shack before continuing your scenic drive.

Day 6 – The Arctic Convoy Coast

Wind your way along the breathtaking coastline, pausing at the Falls of Measach. Discover the hidden wartime history of the World War II Arctic Convoys at Loch Ewe.

Day 7 – Bealach na Bà & the Isle of Skye

Take on one of the North Coast 500’s most iconic stretches – the dramatic Bealach na Bà pass. Look out for red deer and Highland cattle as you descend towards the Isle of Skye.

Day 8 – Discovering Skye

Skye enchants with its ghostly mountain ranges, lush glens and ancient strongholds. Visit Dunvegan Castle – the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland – and absorb the island’s wild, mystical beauty.

Day 9 – Eilean Donan & the Western Highlands

Take the charming Kylerhea ferry back to the mainland and pause at the romantic Eilean Donan Castle. Journey through Fort William and Glenfinnan before ending your day in the peaceful coastal village of Port Appin.

Day 10 – Journey to Islay

Drive through Argyll’s scenic landscapes to Kennacraig and board the ferry to Islay. On arrival, treat yourself to Islay’s famous lobster pizza at Peatzeria in Bowmore before heading to your hotel.

Day 11 – A True Taste of Islay

Immerse yourself in the spirit of Islay, with its ancient Celtic roots, world-class birdlife, pristine beaches and renowned peaty whiskies. Visit iconic distilleries or explore the coastline for a truly authentic island experience.

Day 12 – Return to Port Appin

Ferry back to the mainland and enjoy the historic town of Oban, or take a detour to Loch Awe and the peaceful ruins of Ardchattan Priory. Spend a relaxing evening back in Port Appin.

Day 13 – Return to Edinburgh

Complete your journey through Glen Coe and Rannoch Moor, taking in the cinematic Great Etive Road, made famous by Skyfall. Arrive back in Edinburgh, full of unforgettable memories from your Highland and island adventure.
