This summer is set to be a sizzling one in the world of events. All eyes are on Glasgow this year for the hotly anticipated Commonwealth Games. The annual fun continues at Edinburgh’s Royal Military Tattoo and immerse yourself in the great outdoors by attending a Highland Games or live music event.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games

Mark your calendar for 11 days of world-class action across the city, bringing 3,000 athletes from 74 nations together to compete across 10 sports.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Be dazzled for 90 minutes of performances from military bands, massed pipes and drums, dance and pyrotechnics.

This popular music and arts festival offers a big Highland welcome with its mix of mainstream and emerging artists.

The largest and most prestigious Highland games in the world, it attracts competitors and spectators from across the world.

Highland Games

Running from May to September, this fantastic outdoor gathering features a mix of heavy athletics, dance and music events and are typically held in towns and villages across Scotland. They are a blend of ancient clan traditions and athletic events that are deeply rooted in historical Highland life.

Here are a few events to add to your itinerary:

The Braemar Gathering, Aberdeenshire – often visited by the Royal family, this spectacular event hosts massed pipe bands, elite heavyweight events and Highland dancing amongst a beautiful scenic backdrop.

Ceres Highland Games, Fife – dating back to as early as 1314, it is recorded as Scotland’s oldest Highland Games event. 

Atholl Gathering, Perthshire – hosted in front of Blair Atholl Castle in May, this event holds a strong historical element and is home to the Atholl Highlanders – the last private army in Europe. 

Stirling Highland Games – home of the signature strength event the Stirling Stones, this heavy-stone lifting challenge is a unique competition which you can’t find anywhere else.

Spring in Scotland brings beautiful longer days and lighter nights. 

Edinburgh Science Festival, 4 - 19 April 2026 – 117 events across 25 venues with lots of interactive hands-on activities, workshops and shows 

Glasgow Coffee Festival, 18 - 19 April 2026 – celebrating speciality coffees with tastings and barista workshops. 

Paisley Food & Drink Festival, 24 - 25 April 2026 – street food from local traders and live music. 

Shetland Folk Festival, 30 April - 3 May 2026 – four days of lively traditional music, dance and workshops. 

Arran Rock ‘n’ Blues Festival, 1 - 3 May 2026 – see the beautiful Isle of Arran turned into a buzzing mix of live music and laid-back seaside festival energy.   

Edinburgh Tartan Parade, 9 May 2026 – witness a flurry of pipes, drums, and tartan-clad marches. 

The Gathering in Inverness, 30 May 2026 – celebrate the Highlands of Scotland with live music from a range of home-grown Scottish talent. 

StAnza in St Andrews, March 2027 – poetry festival with readings and workshops.

Summer 

Summer offers a wave of excitement with music festivals, agricultural shows and more. 

Royal Highland Show, Edinburgh, 18 - 21 June 2026 – say hello to the animals, taste the finest regional produce, and see huge agricultural machinery up close. 

Pride Edinburgh, 20 June 2026 – a festival which honours LGBTQ+ and their contributions to Scottish culture. 

East Neuk Festival in Fife, 1 - 5 July 2026 – see the world’s top artists while experiencing the local charm of its coastal villages. 

Glasgow Mela at Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow, 5 July 2026 – Scotland’s largest South Asian festival, featuring multi-cultural music, dance, food, and arts. 

Tiree Music Festival, 10 - 12 July 2026 – home to unforgettable live music and breathtaking island scenery. 

Back Doune the Rabbit Hole in Stirling, 17 - 19 July – an independent Scottish music and arts festival with eclectic live music, family events, and wellness experiences. 

Pittenweem Arts Festival in Fife, 1 - 8 August 2026 – witness vibrant art pieces come to life across the nooks and crannies of the East Neuk in Fife.

The darker nights may be looming, but the fun doesn’t stop here in Scotland.  

The International Ayr Show, 4 - 5 September 2026 – watch the skies dazzle with spectacular aerial displays

Cairnie Fruit Pumpkin Festival in Fife, throughout October – pick your own pumpkin this spooky season. You’ll be spilt for choice with over 20,000 pumpkins to choose from. 

Edinburgh Castle of Light, November 2026 - January 2027 – step into a world of wonder and admire how Edinburgh Castle’s iconic walls are illuminated with colourful projections. 

The Big Hoolie in St Andrews, November 2026 – celebrate our patron saint St Andrew with parades, fireworks and ceilidhs galore. 

The Dundee Hooley, November 2026 – this free family event showcases street theatre, live music, lantern making workshops and face painting.

With the end of the year approaching and the start of a brand-new one, Scotland is set to make it as magical as possible.

Edinburgh’s Christmas Markets and Winter Festivals, November 2026 to January 2027 – offers fairground rides, ice rinks and artisan gifts to buy Christmas presents for loved ones. 

Irn Bru Carnival in Glasgow, December to January 2027 – Europe’s largest indoor funfair. You’ll find everything from rides, rollercoasters and food stalls for a festive family day out. 

Up Helly Aa in Shetland, January 2027 – celebrating the very best of Norse-Scottish history with a torchlit procession. 

The Big Burns Supper in Dumfries, around 25 January 2027 – enjoy a day dedicated to Scotland’s National Bard with a light trail, lantern parade and some haggis, neeps (turnip) and tatties (potatoes). 

SPECTRA in Aberdeen, February 2027 – this spectacular festival focuses on light, art and creativity where you’ll be in awe with lots of architectural illusions across the city. 

Dundee Science Festival, February 2027 – discover the wonders of science, festival, fantastic activities and scientific demonstrations. 

Fife Whisky Festival, February 2027 – taste the best of Fife’s whisky, enjoy live music and soak up a lively festival atmosphere. 

Granite Noir, February 2027 – dive into the dark and thrilling world of crime fiction where suspense and intrigue are guaranteed.
