Isle of Skye

3 Day Isle of Skye Private Tour

Discover the spectacular landscapes, historic castles and rich cultural heritage of the Scottish Highlands and Isle of Skye on a three-day private tour from Inverness, personally guided by Scottish Highlands historian John Alasdair Macdonald, PhD.

Travel along the shores of Loch Ness, explore the medieval ruins of Urquhart Castle and discover the history of Eilean Donan Castle before crossing to Skye. Spend two nights in the colourful harbour town of Portree, with a full day to explore the island's extraordinary scenery, from the dramatic Trotternish Peninsula and the Quiraing to the historic seat of Clan MacLeod at Dunvegan Castle.

The journey also takes you to the quieter Sleat Peninsula, where sweeping coastal views and the wild landscapes of the west offer a different perspective on the island. Throughout the tour, your historian guide brings the landscape to life through the stories of Scotland's past, its clans and its communities.

Designed for a small private group of up to three guests, this is a personal and comfortable way to discover the Highlands and Skye at a relaxed pace, with the flexibility and attention that larger group tours cannot offer.

Full private tour pricing, detailed itinerary and frequently asked questions are available on The Hebridean Explorer website (see tour page).

Day 1 — Inverness to Isle of Skye

Departing Inverness, we follow the legendary banks of Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle, where we go inside the medieval ruins to explore its storied history and enjoy commanding views over the Great Glen. Our journey continues through the dramatic landscapes of Glen Moriston and Glen Shiel, arriving at the iconic Eilean Donan Castle to uncover its historic past. After crossing the bridge to Skye, we pause at the old bridge at Sligachan for a magnificent view of the Black Cuillin peaks before arriving in the colourful harbour town of Portree, our base for the next two evenings.

Day 2 — Isle of Skye

From Portree, we explore the Trotternish Peninsula, pausing for views of the Old Man of Storr and the coastal cascades of Kilt Rock. We then ascend the ancient cattle pass to the Quiraing; looking out over the village of Staffin toward the Northwest Highlands, this remains a definitive highlight of the 'Misty Isle.' After a visit to the Museum of Island Life at Kilmuir, the afternoon is dedicated to Dunvegan Castle. As the ancestral seat of Clan Macleod and the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland, it offers grand history and exquisite gardens to explore before our return to Portree.

Day 3 — Isle of Skye to Inverness

Departing Portree, we journey south to the Sleat Peninsula, an area of stunning coastlines and heather-clad hills often missed by the crowds. Known as a gentler, more intimate side of Skye, it offers quiet roads and hidden vistas that larger tour buses simply cannot reach. We pause at Isleornsay for views across to the Knoydart wilderness before exploring the breath-taking western shores of the peninsula. After a final morning of unhurried discovery, we begin our scenic return journey through the Highlands to Inverness.
