Culzean Castle

Culzean Castle, Burns country and Ayrshire coast

Explore Scotland's west coast in Ayrshire the birthplace of both William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, two of Scotland's most famous heroes as well as the most famous poet in the world "Robert Burns". Learn about all things Ayrshire on this tour.

We will start the day by heading south from Glasgow going past Europe's largest wind farm which powers over 180,000 homes, we will continue south until we get into Ayrshire where the adventure really begins.

Our first stop is a picturesque little fishing village called Dunure which features its own castle which sits right on the sea front, alongside excellent sea views you also get to look out over the water and see ”Scotland in miniature” the Isle of Arran and if you look further south again you’ll see the island Ailsa Craig which is a bird sanctuary, this is where all the granite that they use to make curling stones is quarried from, the company that makes the stones is the only company in the world that makes curling stones that are used in competition and the Winter Olympics.

Once we’ve visited Dunure and learnt about its dark past we will travel to the Greatest King in Scotlands birthplace, Turnberry Castle, it’s now a ruin, and like Dunure Castle sits right on the sea front. Robert the Bruce himself in 1310 ordered that Turnberry castle be destroyed so as not to end up in English hands. You can also see the old World war 2 airfields on the way to the castle as well as the lighthouse that stands right next to where the castle is.

We then take a short drive back up the coast and arrive at Culzean Castle country park, where you can visit the 18th century country house that’s been linked to smuggling, , the smugglers used to use the underground caves right beneath the castle to store all their smuggled goods and then travel to sell it under the cover of darkness. You can also enjoy the massive walled gardens and the forest tracks that surround the castle. Inside the castle, look out for one of the paintings in the castle and have a really good look, we’ll point the picture out, it’s amazing! There’s so much to see in the castle, it’s got weapons that were likely used in the Jacobite uprising from swords, to cannons. It truly is remarkable!

Our next stop is in Alloway to visit the Robert Burns birthplace museum. We will stop for lunch in the café and then you’ll have time to explore the museum with over 5000 artefacts that belongs to Robert Burns, take a walk along poets path to the “spooky” Auld Alloway Kirk where Tam o’Shanter was chased, a short walk from the Kirk is the Brig o‘ Doon in which Tam o’Shanter escaped the witches and warlocks but poor old Meg, Tam’s horse wasn’t so lucky, she got her tail “ripped aff” before they made it to safety.

We will then head back to Glasgow where the tour ends.
