Edinburgh Dean Village Architecture Tour

Tour the picturesque Baronial legacy of the ancient milling village set under the majestic Thomas Telford’s Dean Bridge. A self-guided 1h AUDIO TOUR off the beaten path in a lush, green valley.

Le parcours démarre au marché de Stockbridge avec une introduction à l’histoire des villages situés autour du bourg médiéval d’Édimbourg. Le groupe longera ensuite la rivière «Water of Leith» jusqu’au puits de Saint Bernard, tout en observant l’abondante faune et flore locale.

Votre guide analysera les origines des idées d’Alexander Nasmith et le paysage à la Claude Lorrain qu’exprime le site du puits de Saint Bernard. Après s’être familiarisés avec l’influence des Grands Tours durant les années 1750, nous rejoindrons l’écrasante structure du «Dean Bridge», réalisée par Thomas Telford dans le but de relier «Dean Estate» à la Ville Nouvelle.

Le groupe se situera alors en plein coeur du Dean Village, là où s’implanta la guilde des Baxters et dont le vieux pont, l’ancien péage, un moulin et un barrage subsistent encore aujourd’hui. Nous présenterons ici le rôle qu’a joué l’activité de meunerie, son apogée, et son déclin ultérieur. A partir de bâtiments alentours, votre guide étendra ensuite vos connaissances à l’architecture baroniale écossaise.

En sillonnant les ruelles de Dean Village, le groupe atteindra la cour en grès rouge de «Well Court», un logement social victorien fondé par un philanthrope local avec le propriétaire de journal «Scotsman».

Sur le chemin des galeries, votre guide vous mènera à travers un cimetière couru du 19ème siècle et vous présentera plusieurs personnalités influentes qui y sont enterrées. La découverte de fragments de la «Dean House», encastrés dans les murs de soutènement du cimetière, récompensera les esprits les plus curieux.

L’orphelinat de Thomas Hamilton converti en galerie sera l’occasion parfaite d’aborder les traditions philanthropiques d’Édimbourg et de découvrir différents parements de pierres de l’époque géorgienne.

Le parcours s’achèvera par un superbe exemple de pur grec moderne - l’ancien orphelinat qui est aujourd’hui la Galerie Moderne 1, en face duquel une sculpture paysagère de Charles Jencks est installée.
