Drumnadrochit

Rogues, Picts and a dram above Loch Ness

A tour of the old Balmacaan Estate up to the Viewpoint where you'll hear about Clan Grant, a few characters from the past and see a breathtaking view over towards Loch Ness. Now with added whisky!

UPDATE FOR WINTER SEASON

Get in touch directly and 'Pay What You Like' between October 2020 and March 2021. In recognition of how tough it has been for everyone I'd like to offer the chance for you to pay as much (or as little!) as you'd like.

Hidden secret gardens, 'baby' Giant Sequioa, Rogues, Vikings and possibly even a monster are the things you'll hear about and see during our walk around the Craigmonie Woodland and Balmacaan Estate. Meeting at my house we'll head towards the old estate and wind our way through a mix of oak and native Scots pine woodland on the path up to the viewpoint. Along the way you'll hear the history of the area from visits by Robert the Bruce, the legend of a Norse Prince who lent his name to a couple of landmarks and a Bard that got into a spot of bother with the local clan chief. The viewpoint itself will give spectacular views over Drumnadrochit and Loch Ness where you can pause and soak up the scenery. We'll stop here for a while to have a dram of malt whisky and toast the scenery. Soft drinks can be made available if you let me know in advance.

Outlander fans will be delighted to know that some of the locations in the books are set near here and I can even teach you a wee bit of Gaelic to help you along with some of the dialogue.

We'll finish the walk by dropping back downhill and returning to the village through pine and hazel woodland where you can learn about the work we're doing to manage the woods sustainably and how we forage for natural materials to dye yarn and wool sold in the village.
