Situated in the parish of Harray, the heart of the West Mainland, we are just off the main road from Birsay to Finstown and overlook Harray Loch. It is conveniently close to both Kirkwall (11 miles) and Stromness (10 miles). In 2015 we joined Green Tourism and have been achieved their 'Silver' standard.
For those interested in the neolithic sites we are 3 miles or so from Maeshowe and from there it is a short drive to the Stones of Stenness, Barnhouse Village and the Ness and Ring of Brodgar with Skara Brae a little further along the road. A round trip taking in these along with Birsay and the Broch of Gurness in Evie and a mid-day refreshment stop at the Orkney Brewery is to be recommended.
Fishermen are well catered for with hire boats available at the Merkister Hotel which is situated five minutes drive away on the shore of Harray Loch.
Bird watchers will be keen to visit the new RSPB hide at Cottascarth, a few minutes drive away, where rare hen harriers and other moorland birds may be seen.
Evening meals and a relaxing drink can be found at three hotels within 4 miles and all serve locally sourced food and drink. Have your meal and come and enjoy a late night tea or coffee with some local cheese and biscuits with Shona and Ray in the comfort of our lounge and watch the sun set over the hills. Farther afield there are hotels and restaurants in both Stromness and Kirkwall several of which have live music at the weekends.
The local Harray community hall is the practice venue for the Orkney Strathspey and Reel society on a Monday night and visitors are always welcome.
Our bedrooms are on the first floor. The double bedroom has a king sized bed and our family room a double and single so can be booked as a double or twin. We can make up an extra bed in this room to comfortably accommodate a family of four. Both rooms have full en-suite facilities with large showers. Wi-Fi is free and each room has a TV which doubles as a DVD and CD player. A full breakfast is served in our dining room and we use locally sourced food and eggs from our own hens.
Bedrock is a no-smoking establishment. We regret that we cannot accommodate pets - other than assistance dogs - in the house.
To find us please follow carefully the directions on one of the two maps on our website or for those with satellite navigation our coordinates are 59.02530, -3.178407. (Please do not use our postcode in your SatNav, it will lead you to the wrong house!) We have a very limited bus service with the only regular service being the early morning and late afternoon 'workers' bus to and from Kirkwall which passes some 400yds away. The nearest more frequent service is along the main Kirkwall to Stromness Road which is a two mile walk away.
