Reputed to be one of the oldest inhabited castles in Scotland, the lands were granted to the Kirkpatrick family back in 1232, with the likelihood that the ancient fortalice was built thereafter, though there are conflicting dates of 1180 and 1420, which could make it 12th century or 15th century. Everything about the building was designed for defence purposes; situated on a rise near a flooded plain, the walls are 10 feet thick and access was originally by ladder to a first floor door.
To this day the entrance is still protected by a studded door and iron yett (gate), so please don’t forget your key, as it will be difficult to gain access otherwise! The addition of covered stairs now takes you up to this entrance point and you’ll be pleased to hear a ladder is no longer required.
