This spectacular house occupies a no less spectacular situation on the Oa (pronounced O!) the southwesternmost peninsula on the Isle of Islay. High above the shore, with a sandy beach within walking distance, and surrounded by 150 acres of unspoilt land, it is an escapists heaven.
The modern house is reached by a rough track, but what greets you there makes the effort more than worthwhile. The living space has floor to ceiling windows opening to a secure balcony area and all the rooms have French doors to make the most of the stupendous views.
Islay is famous for two things, birds and whisky, and is well positioned for both with an RSPB reserve on the Oa, where you may even see Islay’s very own golden eagles. You can visit the island’s seven distilleries and recover with a game of golf on the excellent links course at Machrie. Port Ellen (shops, hotels) is just a short drive away while Bowmore has a swimming pool. A visit to neighbouring Jura, the ‘Island of Deer’, is not to be missed.
