DESCRIPTION
A circular walk which starts and finishes at the small car park opposite the church at Chapeltown of Glenlivet.
It begins on wide land rover tracks soon reaching the Ladder Burn which we cross on large stepping stones. We then wind our way up the hill to the bealach (750m) on a fairly steep path where well have a well earned break.
On the plateau, we walk on pathless, sometimes boggy terrain, across to Dun Muir, soon after crossing sections of eroded peat-hags, until we join with the path leading up to the trig point at the top of Carn Mor (804m). From here we walk along the fairly level plateau, passing through a second area of peat hags, and then descend, following a fence line towards two cairns where well have lunch and hopefully enjoy views across to Ben Rinnes and Ben Avon and down to Scalan.
After lunch well descend off path through short heather and juniper bushes to meet the path heading towards The Clash of Scalan and Scalan Seminary, where well spend some time and have the opportunity to see inside the ancient Seminary building, where priests were trained during the 1700s when Catholicism was prohibited in Scotland. We then rejoin the main path and follow the track/road back to the car park.
TERRAIN
Hill path for the ascent, good walking on the broad ridge in parts but also several areas of eroded peat hags to cross. The return route is pathless in places. Walking poles will be useful.
