Delivered in partnership with Robert Gordon University’s BA (Hons) Criminology
Everyone thinks they know how forensic science works. It’s fast, conclusive, and – above all – sexy. Or at least, it is on television. Some of our most popular crime dramas focus on forensic science and forensic scientists with audiences fascinated by the knowledge beyond the microscope. But the presentation of forensic science in entertainment has led to penalties and problems in the real-life criminal justice system – the ‘CSI effect’, where juries expect a wealth of forensic evidence at every crime scene, put a low value on circumstantial evidence, and feel expert enough to question the science themselves. Looking at the representation of forensic science in popular crime television dramas and documentaries, forensic scientist Wendy Deegan and cultural criminologist Saorfhlaith Burton expose what television gets wrong – and right – about forensic science and crime solving.
