Falkland Village

Falkland, Fife

Castles and Mountains

Explore Scotland’s rich history and stunning landscapes, from Edinburgh to Inverness and back. Discover castles, charming villages, coastal cliffs, and Highland vistas—each day packed with unforgettable sights and stories.

Day 1: Edinburgh to Dundee

Your adventure begins in the vibrant city of Edinburgh, as you head north across the majestic Queensferry Crossing. This striking cable-stayed bridge, opened in 2017, offers spectacular views of the Firth of Forth—a fitting start to your scenic journey.

Your first stop is Loch Leven Castle, a historic gem situated on an island in the tranquil waters of Loch Leven. This evocative site is where Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned, her life intertwined with Scotland’s storied past. Wander the grounds, take in the serene views, and imagine the tales these ancient stones could tell.

Next you journey to the charming village of Falkland, nestled at the foot of the Lomond Hills. Falkland is renowned for its stunning Falkland Palace, a Renaissance masterpiece and former royal residence of the Stuart kings and queens, including Mary, Queen of Scots. Explore the palace’s beautiful architecture, manicured gardens, and rich history. Stroll through Falkland’s cobblestone streets, often recognised as a filming location for the hit series Outlander, and enjoy the cozy, timeless atmosphere of this picturesque village.

After your visit, you’ll head to St Andrews, a coastal town brimming with character. Known as the home of golf, this picturesque destination offers more than its famous Old Course. Explore the atmospheric ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, walk the medieval streets, and breathe in the salty sea air along its beautiful beaches. Take time to enjoy a leisurely lunch in one of its quaint cafes, soaking up the town’s historic charm.

The day concludes in Dundee, reputed to be Scotland’s sunniest city. Discover the sleek V&A Dundee, an architectural wonder and museum dedicated to design. Alternatively, visit the RRS Discovery, the legendary ship that carried Captain Scott on his Antarctic expeditions. Relax and savour Dundee’s lively waterfront before settling in for the night.

Day 2: Dundee to Banchory

Our first stop is Dundee Law, a 572-foot (174-meter) extinct volcanic hill that offers stunning views of Dundee, the River Tay, and beyond. Formed 400 million years ago, it’s rich in history, from Iron Age fortifications to roles in both World Wars. At its summit stands a striking war memorial honouring local soldiers from World War I and II. With its scenic paths and panoramic vistas, Dundee Law is the perfect starting point to explore the city’s heritage and beauty.

Next you continue to Glamis Castle, one of Scotland’s most enchanting landmarks. Known as the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, this fairy-tale castle is surrounded by lush gardens and brimming with centuries of history. Let its majestic halls and storied past transport you to another era.

Next, you journey to the dramatic Dunnottar Castle, perched high on rugged cliffs overlooking the crashing waves of the North Sea. These hauntingly beautiful ruins tell tales of sieges and heroism, offering an unforgettable experience of Scotland’s wild coastal beauty.

A short drive brings you to Kinneff Kirk, a small and unassuming church, holds an extraordinary place in Scotland’s history. Following the dramatic smuggling of the Honours of Scotland from Dunnottar Castle during Oliver Cromwell’s siege, they were secretly hidden here in 1651 to protect them from being destroyed. The kirk’s quiet and modest setting belies its role in safeguarding Scotland’s royal heritage.

You will then journey to Cairn o’ Mount, a scenic mountain pass in the Grampian Highlands, renowned for its breathtaking views over Aberdeenshire. This historic route, steeped in legend and natural beauty, provides a glimpse into Scotland’s rugged landscapes

End your day in Banchory, a tranquil town nestled in the heart of the Highlands. Stroll along the River Dee, unwind in a cozy inn, or simply relax and take in the peaceful surroundings.

Day 3: Banchory to Inverness

Your journey begins with a visit to Balmoral Castle, the Scottish home of the Royal Family. Nestled in the heart of Royal Deeside, the castle and its grounds offer a glimpse into royal life. Explore the gardens, grounds, and exhibitions showcasing the castle’s history.

After visiting Balmoral, you head to Corgarff Viewpoint, which offers stunning views of the Cairngorms and the historic Corgarff Castle, a 16th-century tower house later used as a garrison for government troops. This stop provides an excellent mix of history and Highland beauty.

The drive continues through the Cairngorms National Park to Aviemore, a vibrant resort town known for its outdoor activities and spectacular landscapes. Aviemore makes for an ideal spot to enjoy a leisurely lunch or explore the town’s attractions.

After Aviemore, you journey to Fort Augustus, traveling along part of the historic Old Military Road. This 18th-century route, built to suppress Jacobite uprisings, takes you through the heart of Scotland’s most dramatic landscapes, including rugged hills and serene glens. In Fort Augustus, located at the southern tip of Loch Ness, you can explore the charming village, walk along the Caledonian Canal, and enjoy the stunning views of the loch.

From Fort Augustus, you proceed to Invermoriston Falls, a series of captivating waterfalls along the River Moriston. This tranquil spot is perfect for a short walk and some beautiful photo opportunities.

The day concludes in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. Here, you can relax and explore the city, reflecting on a day filled with history, natural beauty, and unforgettable experiences.

Day 4: Inverness to Edinburgh

Step onto the poignant grounds of Culloden Battlefield, the site of the final, fateful battle of the Jacobite Rising in 1746. At the visitor center, vivid exhibits and personal accounts bring this pivotal moment in Scottish history to life.

Nearby, visit Clava Cairns, a mystical Bronze Age site with ancient stone circles and burial cairns. Peaceful and evocative, it offers a serene contrast to the battlefield’s sombre history.

Continuing your journey, you stop at the House of Bruar, an upmarket shopping destination known for its Scottish produce and crafts. Enjoy a leisurely lunch here before heading to your next destination.

Depending on the time and weather, you have the option to stop at Queen’s View, a stunning viewpoint overlooking Loch Tummel. The view is one of the most photographed in Scotland and is well worth a visit if conditions allow.

Conclude your journey at Stirling Castle, a symbol of Scotland’s resilience and grandeur. Perched atop a volcanic outcrop, it offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Walk through its majestic halls, uncover its royal stories, and reflect on the rich history you’ve encountered on your journey.

As you return to Edinburgh, let the memories of Scotland’s stunning landscapes and timeless tales linger, ensuring this journey stays with you forever.
