North Coast Highland Whisky Tour & Scrabster Shore Excursions

Discover whisky in Scotland’s Far North on a private journey through Caithness, with northern distilleries, dramatic coastal scenery and cruise excursions from Scrabster.

Experience the spirit of Scotland’s Far North on a privately guided North Coast Highland Whisky Tour, designed for travellers exploring the northeast Highlands and the quieter, more remote stretches of the North Coast 500.

This is a bespoke, unhurried experience shaped around you, combining exceptional whisky, dramatic coastal landscapes and genuine local insight in a part of Scotland that relatively few visitors have the opportunity to explore in depth.

Ideal for guests staying between Dornoch and Bettyhill, including Golspie, Brora, Helmsdale, Wick, Thurso and surrounding areas, the tour offers a rare opportunity to discover the whisky heritage and character of Caithness at a relaxed pace.

Travel is provided in a premium SUV for up to four guests or a comfortable premium minibus for up to eight guests, offering privacy, comfort and flexibility throughout the day. Larger private groups may also be accommodated by prior arrangement.

Each itinerary is carefully shaped around your base location, interests and preferred pace. Potential distillery visits may include the maritime character of Old Pulteney in Wick, the northern craftsmanship of Wolfburn in Thurso, the contemporary approach of 8 Doors at John O’Groats, and other independent distilleries and spirit producers across the Far North, subject to availability.

Rather than trying to fit as much as possible into a single day, the emphasis is on quality over quantity. A typical itinerary may include up to five thoughtfully chosen experiences or stops, combining distilleries with scenic viewpoints, historic sites and lesser-known local places.

This creates a more relaxed journey, with time to properly enjoy both the whisky and the extraordinary landscapes that surround it.

While whisky sits at the heart of the experience, the North Coast offers much more. Depending on your interests, we can incorporate dramatic coastal scenery, ancient archaeological sites, castles and historic ruins, local food or other carefully selected stops, creating a day that feels varied without ever becoming rushed.

Three Ways to Experience the Tour

Every North Coast Highland Whisky Tour is private, thoughtfully designed and hosted with the same care and attention to detail. You can choose the level of advance organisation and whisky experience that best suits you.

Standard Private Tour

A flexible private whisky tour shaped around your interests, location and the opportunities available on the day.

We provide guidance on suitable distilleries, tastings and other stops, while admission to individual visitor experiences is paid separately.

A hosted whisky tasting selected from our personal collection can also form part of the journey, adding a distinctive and personal element to your time in the Far North.

Curated Package

For guests who would prefer the principal arrangements taken care of in advance, the Curated Package offers a more seamless experience.

Suitable distillery visits, tastings and other agreed experiences are selected and arranged ahead of the day, allowing you to simply enjoy a carefully structured journey through the whisky and landscapes of northern Scotland.

Premium Experience

For whisky enthusiasts looking for something more exceptional, our Premium Experience is individually created around deeper engagement, distinctive whiskies and more specialised experiences.

Depending on availability, this may include premium or specialist distillery experiences, privately hosted tastings from our collection featuring rare or limited bottlings, and other opportunities selected specifically around your interests.

Every Premium Experience is designed individually, allowing us to create something genuinely personal rather than following a predetermined itinerary.

The difference between each option lies in the level of organisation, access and experience involved. The standard of hosting, care and attention remains consistent throughout.

Whisky Shore Excursions from Scrabster

Arriving by cruise ship at Scrabster Harbour near Thurso?

We also offer private Scrabster shore excursions designed specifically around cruise schedules.

A typical Scrabster experience lasts approximately six hours, depending on your ship’s arrival and departure times, and can combine northern whisky with some of the remarkable scenery, history and character of Caithness.

Pickup and drop-off are arranged at Scrabster port, with the itinerary carefully planned around the time you have ashore and an appropriate margin allowed for your return to the ship.

Rather than trying to recreate our longer North Coast itinerary in a shorter window, we select the experiences that make the most sense for your particular cruise call, creating a relaxed and rewarding day without unnecessary rushing.

Explore More of the Highlands During Your Cruise

If your cruise itinerary includes more than one of Invergordon, Ullapool and Scrabster, you don’t need to start again with a different tour company at every port. tuigsear offers private shore excursions from all three, allowing us to create a seamless multi-day Highland experience across your voyage.

Each port opens the door to a completely different part of Scotland, from whisky country, castles and historic towns around Invergordon, to the mountains, lochs and wild Atlantic landscapes of Ullapool and Assynt, and the dramatic coastline, ancient history and distilleries of Caithness from Scrabster.

Spend more than one day with us and your experience becomes even more personal, with each excursion complementing the last rather than repeating it.

If your cruise visits two or three Highland ports, send us your full itinerary when enquiring and we’ll recommend the best combination of experiences for your time ashore.

Whether you are staying in Caithness, travelling the North Coast as part of a wider Highland journey, or arriving by cruise ship, every North Coast Highland Whisky Tour is created with care, local knowledge and a genuine passion for sharing one of Scotland’s most distinctive whisky regions.

If you have particular distilleries, whisky styles or other experiences in mind, get in touch and we will be happy to advise on the best way to shape your day.
