South Oban Slate Islands and Kilmartin

Discover the beauty of Scotland's west coast on a tour from Oban! Marvel at the rugged scenery of South Oban Slate Islands and explore the ancient sites of Kilmartin. A perfect blend of nature and history awaits you on this unforgettable journey. Boo

  • Start your day by driving south from Oban towards Kilbride.  This small village is home to the ruins of Kilbride Chapel, a historic 13th-century church. Take a stroll around the grounds and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
  • Next, head to the Bridge over the Atlantic on Seil Island. The bridge connects the island to mainland Scotland and offers stunning views of the surrounding sea and islands. Take a walk across the bridge and enjoy the scenery.
  • After visiting the bridge, take the foot passenger ferry from Ellenabeich to Easdale Island. This small, car-free island was once the center of the slate industry in the area and is now a popular tourist destination. Take a walk around the island and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
  • After exploring Easdale Island, head back to Ellenabeich and visit the Ellanbeich Slate Museum. This small museum showcases the history of the local slate industry, which was an important part of the economy in the area. Learn about the process of extracting slate from the quarry and see examples of the finished product.
  • For lunch, head to the Tigh an Truish Inn. This traditional Scottish pub is located right on the shore of Seil Island, offering stunning views of the surrounding scenery. The menu features a range of hearty pub fare, including fresh seafood, sandwiches, and traditional Scottish dishes like haggis and neeps. They also have a selection of local beers and spirits to try. It's a great spot to take a break, enjoy some delicious food, and soak in the local atmosphere before continuing your tour of South Oban.
  • From Tigh an Truish, head to the nearby village of Kilmartin. This village is home to an impressive collection of standing stones and cairns, which date back to the Neolithic period. Explore the sites and learn about the history of the area.
  • Finally, make your way back to Oban, stopping off at any other points of interest along the way. Once you arrive back in Oban, you can enjoy a well-deserved meal and reflect on your day of exploring the beautiful South Oban area.
