This historic walking tour is a storytelling journey that shows how Edinburgh transformed from medieval town into Athens of the North. You don't just see the sights, you learn the story of Edinburgh.

The tour is not just an opportunity to see some of the historic sites of the Royal Mile, but also to go on a journey as Edinburgh transformed from a medieval town to taking its place among the capital cities of the world. Every stop we make helps paint the picture of how the old town of Edinburgh transformed, the buildings changed, and how even though the the modern day crept in, the past has left a footprint


Beginning in front of St Giles' Cathedral, this journey from medieval Edinburgh to modern-day visits closes, courtyards and historic streets that shaped Scotland’s capital for nearly 900 years. Along the way, you’ll discover how a cramped walled city built on an extinct volcano transformed itself into one of the world’s great capital cities.


From plague-ridden graveyards and towering medieval tenements to royal politics, devastating fires, hidden tunnels, and legendary characters, this tour explores both the grand history and gritty reality of life on the Royal Mile.


We will show you some of the highlights of the Royal Mile, and all of our stories combined will teach you how Edinburgh changed and grew.
