Drumnadrochit

A Woodland Walk and a Dram by Loch Ness

This is an easy and flat walk through Urquhart Bay Woods to Loch Ness. A short river crossing takes you over to the Loch for views over Urquhart Bay. We'll take the opportunity to stop for a dram by the side of the Loch.

We’ll pass the old and very picturesque Kilmore Cemetery on the way there before venturing into the woods themselves. Locally known as ‘The Cover’ this is a Special Site of Scientific Interest and one of the best examples of wet woodland anywhere in Europe. It’s a haven for wildlife and a little oasis of calm away from the crowds in the village centre.

Two rivers Enrick and Coiltie run through Drumnadrochit and these two meet at the edge of the woods. The confluence is a sun trap and you can stop here to take pictures and even paddle in the rivers.

From here we’ll cross the River Coiltie, you will get wet feet so prepare to take your socks and shoes off! Do note that if the river is running too high and fast then for the sake of safety we’ll go no further.

Once across the river it’s a very short walk to Urquhart Bay where you’ll have a panoramic view over Loch Ness. Again, if you love the water then this is the place to come and say you’ve dipped your toes in Loch Ness. At this point we'll stop for a dram of malt whisky and you can toast the loch, the Highlands and even Nessie if you want!

The tour up to the river crossing is suitable for buggies and the path is wide enough that wheelchairs that can cope with most of if they have decent tyres. Get in touch if you have any accessibility issues and I'll do my very best to accommodate you. Obviously kids can't share in the whisky but if you do have under-18s let me know in advance and I'll supply a soft drink.
