The Royal Mile - Edinburgh, Scotland

Makars' Court to St Giles' Cathedral: Edinburgh Storytelling Walking Tour

Start in Makars’ Court by the Writers’ Museum for literary legends. Next, explore Edinburgh Castle Esplanade for royal drama. Then meet Greyfriars Bobby and hear the true tale. Cross George IV Bridge to the Royal Mile, ending at St Giles’ Cathedral.

Join former history professor, Sami, for a family-friendly, 135-minute Old Town walking tour built around great storytelling and genuine connection - sometimes joined by one of our Golden Retriever tour guides.

With an 11:00am start, this walk is perfect if you’d rather skip the early-morning rush: enjoy a relaxed breakfast, arrive unhurried, and settle into a more intentional pace as the city comes to life.

We begin in Makars’ Court beside the Writers’ Museum, where Edinburgh’s literary voices set the scene and the city’s love of words becomes our opening chapter. From there we move toward the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, with the skyline as a backdrop for high drama - sieges, battles, kings and queens, and the mysteries that still cling to the stone.

Descending Castlehill, the story shifts from power to belief as we step into Edinburgh’s world of witches, wizards, and the everyday lives that shaped the Old Town’s imagination. We continue toward colourful Victoria Street and into the Grassmarket, where the city’s beauty meets its tougher history and the lives of ordinary locals - workers, rebels, and rule-breakers - take centre stage.

Next, we reach Greyfriars Bobby for a heartfelt moment that stays with many guests. From there we rejoin the Royal Mile to meet the thinkers and larger-than-life characters who shaped Edinburgh’s identity, along with the surprising twists and scandals that make the city feel vividly real.

We finish at St Giles’ Cathedral with tales of saints and sinners, power and punishment, and reputations made (and unmade) - a strong ending that ties the threads together, so you leave with a coherent story of Edinburgh, not just a list of stops.

This tour is ideal for curious travellers who want a richer, more personal Old Town story. It’s a great fit for those who would like a later start, a relaxed pace, and a story-shaped walk that adapts to the group - sometimes with a Golden Retriever tour guide.
