Floors Castle near Kelso in the Borders is Scotland’s largest inhabited castle and is vast is size and scale. Built by William Adam, father of Robert, in 1721 and remodelled in the 1830’s by William Playfair the castle is an architectural masterpiece of opulence and grandeur. Home to the Duke and Duchess of Roxburgh the castle houses one of the finest collections of porcelain, crystal and china anywhere including Dresden and Meissen.

Mellerstain House is one of Robert Adams greatest works with perfectly proportioned rooms featuring exquisite plasterwork cornices and artwork. Housing Old Masters from Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Ramsay as well other priceless collections of furniture, rugs and wallpaper, the house allows the visitor to see how the richest in society lived in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Greenknowe Tower near the village of Gordon is a well preserved example of a Scottish Tower House built at a time where defence and protection were more important than comfort and space. The tower, which is a miniature castle common throughout Scotland at this time, dates from the 1500’s

The Jim Clark Rooms are a brand new museum paying homage to one of the Borders most famous sons. Formula One World Champion in 1963 and 1965, runner up in 1964, Indy 500 winner also in 1965 Jim Clark farmed and lived near Duns. A friend and contemporary of fellow Scotsman and triple World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark died during a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim in 1968. Jim Clark had 25 Grand Prix wins out of 72 starts and was pole position in almost half of them making him one of the greatest drivers of all time. The new museum displays his trophies, personal possessions and a rotating selection of the cars he raced in. A real must see for any fan of motorsport.

This is a full day tour with lunch taken in Kelso or at one of the attractions visited. Contact us for more information.
