Princes Street Gardens - Edinburgh, Scotland

Makars' Court to Scott Monument

Start at Makars’ Court for this walking tour, then follow the Royal Mile past castle drama, Old Town folklore, and Greyfriars Bobby. Continue via Cockburn Street into the New Town, finishing by the Scott Monument.

Join former history professor, Sami, for a 3-hour guided walk through Edinburgh’s Old Town and New Town edges, packed with vivid stories, surprising details, and a genuine sense of connection. Sometimes you’ll be joined by one of our Golden Retriever tour guides, too.

With an 11:00am start, this is a great choice if you’d rather skip the earliest crowds. You can arrive at a calmer pace, settle in, and enjoy the walk as the city fully wakes up around you - without feeling rushed.

We begin at Makars’ Court, where the city’s literary legacy sets the tone. Then we head toward the Castle - sharing tales of sieges, royal ambition, and intrigue. As we continue down Castlehill, the stories turn close and atmospheric, with Edinburgh folklore coming to the fore: witches, wizards, and the fears and fascinations people once carried through these old closes.

Next, we move through Victoria Street and along to the Grassmarket, where everyday life and dramatic chapters have always shared the same streets. From there, we head toward Greyfriars Bobby and explore why his legend is so emotionally powerful and still resonates today.

Then, we continue along the Royal Mile past landmarks including St Giles’ Cathedral and Tron Kirk - looking for the hidden histories you’d likely miss on your own.

As we make our way down Cockburn Street, we’ll follow the shift in mood and character as the old streets give way to new ideas - crossing the landscape associated with the former Nor Loch and watching the story open out toward the New Town. Along the route, you’ll hear about the people behind Edinburgh’s reinventions: thinkers, workers, rebels, and larger-than-life locals whose ideas, conflicts, and reputations still echo through the streets.

We finish near the Scott Monument, with the feeling that you’ve travelled through centuries in one continuous, story-shaped walk - leaving you with a fresh way of seeing Edinburgh’s city centre.

This tour is ideal for travellers who want a more encompassing Edinburgh walking experience: later start, relaxed pace, great storytelling- and sometimes joined by a Golden Retriever tour guide.
