This one-day winter skills course will provide you with the basics of winter mountain hiking and mountaineering.

Designed for active walkers and hikers, we will meet in Aviemore to discuss the plan for the day. This will include checking your experience and equipment. We will also learn the basics of planning a safe journey in the winter mountains.

If hire equipment is needed, you can pick this up from several providers in Aviemore. You will need winter hiking/mountaineering boots, an ice axe, crampons and a climbing helmet. Plus, your personal gear and a packed lunch (a full kit list will be provided at booking).

There are many place we could walk on this day, but the slopes and corries of Cairn Gorm are often a good choice. Depending on the weather (which can be pretty wild!), our journey will takes us through some of the most spectacular muntain terrain in Britain. We will lean ice axe and crampon skills on the way, together with various journeying, navigation and safety skills. Of course, avalanche safety will be a key consideration throughout.

Your guide is Malcolm O'Reilly, an experienced and highly qualified leader, who has worked as a guide and instructor for nearly 20 years, mainly in the Highlands of Scotland.
