Walking and hiking

Scotland has a great variety of walking options from dramatic coastal paths to breath-taking mountain routes, and simple countryside footpaths to wilder peaceful trails.

Challenge yourself with over 280 Munros (mountains over 3,000 ft) including the iconic Ben Nevis, or breakdown one of our long-distance routes into a slow meander over a week with stunning scenery.

Cycling

Scotland is home to railway paths, canal towpaths, forest roads, shared-use paths and cycle lanes which allow you to safely explore the country. Choose one of the country’s national routes routes such as the Ayrshire Coast Cycle Way with views of Arran or the Round the Inner Forth for two days of Scotland’s rich industrial heritage – and the Kelpies!

Head into the outdoors on two wheels where you can choose from over 2,000 miles of  that encompass country roads and cycle paths. Follow along colour coded signposts, take in the rolling landscapes, and travel at your own pace.

Mountain biking

Scotland’s landscape was made for mountain biking. Our mountain bike trails will take you through hills, glens and forests or there are brilliant beginner-friendly bike parks and pump tracks plus a network of guides, shops and biker-friendly cafés.

Watersports

Scotland is an ideal location for enjoying a range of watersports due to its diverse landscapes that boast thousands of kilometres of coastline, hundreds of islands, and, of course, our famous lochs and rivers.

Take a gentle paddle down one of our rivers in a canoe or kayak – the Argyll Sea Kayak Trail has eight sections to explore, along the stunning coastline and the Crinan Canal. Get in on the latest trend of paddleboarding in one of our east coast towns such as St Andrews or Dunbar. Feel the magic of water in your face as you career down the wild rivers of Perthshire with some white water rafting.

Golf courses and greens

Scotland is known as the Home of Golf thanks to our history and over 500 courses across links, parkland and 9-holes. Try a round yourself or watch the greats compete head-to-head in tournaments such as the Open Championship and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Beginner-friendly

Thrill seeker

Not many people can say they've jumped off a cliff into a deep-water pool before slipping and sliding down a natural water flume. Go canyoning with Vertical Descents in Fort William.

Slow adventures

There’s nothing quite like a slow swim in nature. Head out with Wild Hebridean Swimming and a wild swim retreat around the incredible islands of Mull and Iona.

Elena from VisitScotland recently went on a bungee jumping experience in the heart of Perthshire with Highland Fling Bungee.

"Bungee jumping is definitely not for the faint hearted, however I've never thought I could have such a thrilling experience in the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. I think the autumn season is the best time to spend some time outdoors while experiencing the stunning changing colours of nature in Scotland."

So, is bungee jumping worth a try? Elena thinks so!

"Definitely recommended for the adrenaline lovers and for the ones looking to tick something off their bucket list!"

FAQs about outdoor activities in Scotland

When is the best time of year to enjoy outdoor activities in Scotland?

You can enjoy outdoor activities anytime in Scotland, but between April and September is when you can make the most of the summer weather and longer days. Think long walks in spring, cycling along the coast in summer, or spending an autumn day out on the river.

Are Scotland’s adventure activities suitable for beginners?

Yes, most outdoor activities are suitable for beginners and don’t require you to have any previous experience. Scotland’s outdoor activities are led by experienced instructors that will guide you through how to do each activity.

Where should I go for an outdoor adventure break?

Anywhere! Scotland has a great offering of outdoor activities across the country, but why not try Perthshire for some watersports, south Scotland for the mountain biking centres, or the Outer Hebrides for a long-distance trail suitable for walking or cycling.

What equipment will I need?

You won’t need to bring any equipment with you, but we recommend packing sturdy shoes, a change of clothes, a waterproof jacket, and an extra warm layer, depending on what activity you choose to do.

You can learn more about outdoor safety and the correct clothing and equipment to bring with you.

Are outdoor activities accessible for older travellers or those with limited mobility?

Yes, there are a variety of outdoor activities that are suitable for older travellers and those with accessibility requirements. In Scotland you can enjoy accessible trails through National Parks that are suitable for wheelchair and mobility scooter users, enjoy a guided tour, wildlife watching, some water activities and more. Take a look at Euan’s Guide and AccessAble for ideas from reviews and access guides.

Do I need to book in advance?

Most activity centres and providers will need you to book in advance because some activities have a maximum number of participants per booking, for safety. Booking in advance is also the best way to ensure you don’t miss out!
