Itinerary-

Dunnottar Castle

Dunnottar Castle is a dramatic and historic ruin perched on a cliff overlooking the North Sea, near Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire. Once a formidable fortress, it played a significant role in Scottish history, including sheltering the Scottish Crown Jewels from Oliver Cromwell’s forces in the 17th century. The castle's stunning location and rich history make it a must-visit for those exploring the region, offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into Scotland’s past. It’s a symbol of resilience, withstanding numerous sieges throughout its storied existence.

Mill of Benholm

Benholm Mill, near the coastal village of Johnshaven in Aberdeenshire, is a charming and historic water-powered grain mill dating back to the 18th century. Nestled in a picturesque valley, it offers a glimpse into rural Scottish life and traditional milling practices. The mill is part of a larger heritage site that includes surrounding buildings, a mill pond, and natural areas, creating a tranquil setting rich in history and nature.

Originally built to serve the local farming community, the mill operated for centuries, producing oatmeal and other grains. It was restored in the 1990s to preserve its historical and cultural significance. While it's not currently operating, the mill remains a beloved landmark and occasionally opens for community events, historical tours, and educational activities. It's a great spot for visitors interested in Scottish heritage, local history, and the beautiful countryside of Aberdeenshire.

Charming Johnshaven

Johnshaven is a picturesque fishing village on the North Sea coast of Aberdeenshire, known for its charming harbour and rich maritime history. Traditionally a fishing and net-making hub, the village retains much of its coastal character with old stone cottages and scenic views. Today, Johnshaven is a peaceful spot for visitors seeking a quiet escape and opportunities to explore the surrounding coastline.

A brief visit to the Johnshaven Lobester Shop might be an option or an opportunity to grab a coffee or tea at the local cafe. We have several options for lunch both in Johnshaven or Gourdon, depending on the tour groups preferences. The Starfish Studio is a lovely gift shop where you could pick up a little memento of your trip.

Working harbour - Gourdon

Gourdon is a small, traditional fishing village known for its active harbour, where you can still see local fishermen at work, it offers a glimpse into Scotland's fishing heritage. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood at the local fish restaurant, explore the scenic coastal path to Inverbervie, or simply take in the village’s relaxed charm. With its historic boats, rugged coastline, and peaceful atmosphere, Gourdon is a lovely stop for anyone exploring the northeast of Scotland.

Seaside resort town of Stonehaven

Stonehaven is a charming coastal town offering a mix of history and natural beauty. Stroll around the picturesque Stonehaven Harbour, and enjoy a peaceful walk along the sandy beach and admire the sculptures along the boardwalk. History enthusiasts can visit the Tolbooth Museum to learn about the town's heritage, or go in search for an ice cream at one of the town's many ice cream shops.

Newtonhill's lost harbour

Newtonhill, formerly known as Skateraw, was once a thriving fishing community, it was home to a now-lost harbour, which was central to the village’s fishing industry until the late 19th century when it fell into disuse.

A notable incident in the village’s past is Lady Isabella, a shipwreck that occurred off the coast of Newtonhill in 1858. The tragedy struck when the vessel ran aground, leading to the loss of many lives and becoming a poignant part of local lore. Today, Newtonhill is a quiet residential village, with traces of its fishing heritage still visible in the rugged coastline and the stories of its past.

Girdleness Lighthouse & Greyhope Bay

Girdleness Lighthouse, located on the outskirts of Aberdeen, is an iconic coastal landmark overlooking Greyhope Bay. Built in 1833 by renowned engineer Robert Stevenson, the lighthouse was constructed in response to a tragic shipwreck and remains operational today, guiding vessels safely through the treacherous North Sea waters. Greyhope Bay, with its rocky shoreline and sweeping sea views, is a popular spot for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts, offering the chance to spot dolphins and seabirds. Together, Girdleness Lighthouse and Greyhope Bay represent both the natural beauty and maritime heritage of the Aberdeen coastline.
