In the Footsteps of the Queen Mother, Caithness
Introduction
A bespoke private tour of Caithness in the Northern Highlands, with a local guide around our dramatic coastline and through the favourite places of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, at Mey.
Highlights:
- Pickup. Itinerary order will change depending of location of pickup!
- John o’Groats with its’ mecca of cafes, tourist outlets and Highland Shop AND the ever popular ‘Journeys End’ signpost
- Travel via Canisbay Church, Canisbay where the Queen Mother worshipped during her holidays – once belonged to the Sinclairs of Mey.
- Travel to Mey. A Standard Guided optional extra – Private Tour of the Castle of Mey will give you a great view of the castle and contents (as it was when she passed away in 2002). Built by 4th Earl of Caithness. Tour type to be agreed beforehand.
- Visit her beloved Gardens of Mey – sit in her chair, enjoy the flowers and scents.
- Visit the Animal Centre of rare breeds – roaming through the shady woods on the way.
- Call to the Visitors Centre and enjoy lunch or a cream tea, and perhaps some elegant shopping. Note her favourite blue plaid is used in the decor in the visitors centre.
- Travel along the Pentland Firth. On a clear day you can see the Orkney Islands and nearby Stroma Island sights that she so loved.
- Enjoy the views across to her friend’s home, from where she first caught sight of the ruinous castle that he saved.
- Stop to view over to Thurso Castle once home of her friends – now a ruin.
- Return.
Historic Caithness is truly the most dramatic and photogenic part of the Northern Highlands of Scotland, and a living testament to the determination and efforts of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in refurbishing and saving this castle that we are able to enjoy this today.
Pick up
- Inverness, Dornoch, Thurso, Wick, Castle of Mey, Invergordon or Scrabster – or location to be agreed when booking
- Cruise ship passengers are met by the guide outside service port gate, a short walk from the gangway.
Tour duration
- Day or Extended Day Tours to be agreed when finalising tour.
- Times: 09:00 – 17:00 or as arranged (tours for cruise ships will be aligned to times in port).
