Private Whisky Tour from Edinburgh

Highland Whisky Private Tour from Edinburgh

This memorable whisky tour visits two distilleries set amidst the beautiful scenery of Highland Perthshire. Famous Grouse, Deanston, Doune Castle, Highlands...

Discover the Highland Whisky Distilleries on a private full day tour from Edinburgh. The most diverse and wide spread Scotch Whisky Region in Scotland. Often described as fruity and flavourful with many influences of the surrounding nature such as heather. This is a customisable tailor-made tour and the itinerary can be adjusted to your request.

In the morning your private driver guide will pick you up from you hotel and set off for the Scottish Highlands. On the way you will learn the story of whisky and some personal views from the guide on how to drink it. By the end of the day you will have a basic knowledge on the process of making whisky as we tour through the various distilleries. Starting with the barley, leaving it to germinate then mashed and yeast added to make wash (beer). The distillation process is where the art of making whisky begins. Each still shaped differently to give its unique taste. After aged for at least 3 years in a warehouse where the angels take their share.

Most distilleries are set in a romantic area, tucked away in a secluded glen and surrounded by hills. This was to hide from the tax man while make illegal whisky in the 18th century. Always close by a water source as that is the most important ingredients to whisky. The name whisky comes from the Gaelic language word "Uisge Beathe" which translates as "Water of Life

First we go to Deanston Distillery based on the River Teith used to be a large cotton mill dating back to 1785. It was then closed in 1965 and 2 years later was converted into a whisky distillery. Deaston crafts its whisky the traditional way with unchill-filtered, which means that nothing is added and nothing is taken away. This distillery offers 5 different tastings; the first 3 options of 1, 2 or 3 drams which all last about 1 hour; Heritage Tour Guided tour of Deanston Village and water source including 3 drams (75 minutes); or 3 whisky tastings and 3 chocolates (90min). Close by is the medieval Doune Castle, used in many movies including Monty Python and Outlander. If time permits we can visit here

Glenturret Distillery (Famous Grouse Experience) is an award wining attraction and a must to include on any whisky tour. The distillery itself is one of the oldest Single Malt producers in Scotland, illegally making whisky since 1775. It is an important ingredient to the blended whisky Famous Grouse. On the tour we will first see how the single malt is produced then learn how it is blended to perfection. Tasting options include; Standard Tour is 1 hour with 2 drams; Famous Tasting is the standard tour plus special tasting of 3 drams 1h30m; or Finest Tasting with tour plus 3 finest whiskies. The distillery also has a very nice restaurant we can plan for lunch.
