Scotland's Ancient East

Experience the best of Scotland on this immersive 8-day coach tour. With luxury stays at Maryculter House and Melville Castle, this journey blends comfort, culture, and unforgettable experiences.

Day 1

We begin our journey today with a visit to The Kelpies - towering equine sculptures that inspire awe with their immense scale and striking presence. These iconic landmarks, created by renowned artist Andy Scott, stand as powerful guardians of the landscape, symbolizing Scotland’s rich industrial heritage and deep-rooted mythological past. Our route then takes us to the dramatic Dunnottar Castle, perched high upon a rugged cliff overlooking the North Sea. This breathtaking medieval fortress, steeped in over a thousand years of history, has witnessed tales of power, intrigue, and defiance. Its windswept battlements and crumbling stone walls once sheltered Scottish crown jewels and resisted mighty armies, while its panoramic views of the surrounding coastline remain as captivating today as they were in centuries past. We pause here for a memorable photo stop, capturing the wild beauty and storied legacy of one of Scotland’s most iconic strongholds. From here, we continue to our luxurious retreat for the next four nights: the elegant Maryculter House, where timeless charm meets modern comfort in the heart of Aberdeenshire.

Dinner/Overnight: Maryculter House, Aberdeen

Day 2

Our day starts with a scenic journey on the Royal Deeside Railway, a heritage steam and diesel railway that winds through the stunning landscape along the River Dee. We then enjoy a captivating falconry display—known as the "Sport of Kings"—showcasing the centuries-old art of training and flying majestic birds of prey. To round off the day, we tour a traditional whisky distillery and enjoy a wee tasting—Slàinte!

Dinner/Overnight: Maryculter House, Aberdeen

Day 3

Our day begins with a visit to Braemar Castle, where we step into a rich tapestry of living history. From the moment you enter and ascend the spiral staircase, the castle reveals its fascinating past—originally built in 1628 as a hunting lodge, later transformed into a stark redcoat military garrison, and eventually evolving into a refined high-society retreat with deep royal ties. Of special note is Canada’s role in the castle’s story: Canadian soldiers were once stationed here during World War II, leaving behind traces of their presence that are still remembered today. Nestled in the heart of Cairngorms National Park, the Glen Tanar Estate offers a perfect blend of breathtaking landscapes and cultural heritage. Our visit includes a guided tour of the estate, a light lunch, an up-close experience feeding the iconic Highland cows, and even a chance to join in some traditional Scottish dancing!

Light Lunch/Overnight: Maryculter House, Aberdeen

Day 4

Today, we journey to the eastern tip of Aberdeenshire to explore the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses—a tribute to the enduring strength and brilliance of maritime engineering. Built by the famed Mr. Stevenson and battered by relentless storms and waves, these beacons tell the incredible story of the Northern Lighthouse Board, the visionary engineers who constructed them, and the brave keepers who maintained them. It’s a tale of courage, skill, and technical genius. Afterward, we enjoy a delicious lunch.

Our adventure continues with a gripping guided tour of Peterhead Prison Museum, where we uncover the harsh realities and remarkable stories from inside Scotland’s toughest jail. Led by an expert guide, you’ll walk through the prison’s stark corridors and hear firsthand accounts of life behind bars.

We end this brilliant day with a visit to a local family farm, where you’ll witness the impressive skills of working sheepdogs in action.

Lunch/Dinner/Overnight: Maryculter House, Aberdeen

Day 5

This morning we head to the magnificent Glamis Castle for a guided tour. Steeped in royal history, Glamis was the childhood home of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and the birthplace of her younger daughter, HRH Princess Margaret. Afterward, we treat our taste buds with a visit to the charming Gin Bothy for a tasting experience filled with local flavours and delights. Our next stop is the historic town of St Andrews, where you'll have free time to explore the medieval streets, visit the ruins of the ancient cathedral, or simply soak in the atmosphere of the world-famous Home of Golf. We end the day at the elegant Melville Castle Hotel, nestled just outside Edinburgh, where we’ll spend the next three nights.

 Day 6

We spend the day exploring the beautiful Scottish Borders, beginning with a visit to the captivating Rosslyn Chapel. Founded in 1446 as a place of worship—and still holding weekly services today—the chapel gained worldwide attention following its appearance in The Da Vinci Code, but its true intrigue lies in its intricate stone carvings and centuries of mystery.

Next, we tour Abbotsford, the remarkable home of literary legend Sir Walter Scott, where we’ll also enjoy a delightful lunch in a charming setting that reflects his legacy.

Our final stop is The Great Tapestry of Scotland—one of the world’s largest community arts projects. Hand-stitched by over 1,000 people from across the country, this stunning work is made up of 160 panels and over 300 miles of wool—enough to stretch the entire length of Scotland—beautifully telling the nation’s story through thread.

Lunch/Overnight: Melville Castle Hotel, nr Edinburgh

Day 7

We begin with a short drive into Edinburgh, where we enjoy a panoramic tour showcasing the stunning contrasts between the city’s historic Old Town and vibrant New Town.

Afterward, the rest of the day is yours to explore at your leisure—whether wandering charming streets, visiting iconic landmarks, or simply soaking in the city’s unique atmosphere.

In the evening, we gather at a central restaurant to share a memorable farewell dinner, accompanied by enchanting Scottish folklore, before returning to our hotel.
