Looking over Loch Broom from Ullapool

Ullapool

Private Shore Excursions from Ullapool

Journey into the wild Northwest Highlands on a private Ullapool shore excursion through mountains, lochs, castles, coastlines and extraordinary Highland scenery.

This is more than a sightseeing tour. It is a privately guided journey into the wild beauty and deep history of the Northwest Highlands, designed specifically for guests arriving by cruise ship into Ullapool.

Hosted by an experienced local guide with an intimate knowledge of the region, this six-hour shore excursion is carefully timed to fit comfortably within your ship’s schedule, ensuring a relaxed return to port while allowing you to experience some of the most dramatic scenery in Scotland at an unhurried pace.

Travel in a premium SUV for up to four guests or a comfortable premium minibus for groups of up to eight guests, allowing you to explore the Highlands privately, comfortably and with the flexibility to make the most of the day.

At selected viewpoints throughout the journey, guests may also be invited to enjoy a hosted whisky tasting from our personal collection, featuring distinctive and carefully chosen drams selected to complement the landscapes around you. It offers a quiet moment to pause and enjoy the setting rather than a formal tasting experience.

Every Ullapool shore excursion is flexible by design. While the routes below provide inspiration, the day can be gently adapted to suit your interests, pace, available time and prevailing conditions, creating a personal Highland experience rather than a fixed itinerary.

Explore More of the Highlands During Your Cruise

If your cruise itinerary includes more than one of Invergordon, Ullapool and Scrabster, you don’t need to start again with a different tour company at every port. tuigsear offers private shore excursions from all three, allowing us to create a seamless multi-day Highland experience across your voyage.

Each port opens the door to a completely different part of Scotland, from whisky country, castles and historic towns around Invergordon, to the mountains, lochs and wild Atlantic landscapes of Ullapool and Assynt, and the dramatic coastline, ancient history and distilleries of Caithness from Scrabster.

Spend more than one day with us and your experience becomes even more personal, with each excursion complementing the last rather than repeating it.

If your cruise visits two or three Highland ports, send us your full itinerary when enquiring and we’ll recommend the best combination of experiences for your time ashore.

Suggested Touring Routes

Our excursions generally explore one of two directions, selected according to your interests, the time available and prevailing weather and road conditions.

Southbound Route

Dramatic landscapes, gardens and coastal beauty

Travelling south from Ullapool reveals a rich mix of natural wonders and quieter Highland scenery.

Possible highlights include Corrieshalloch Gorge, where dramatic rock formations and cascading waterfalls create one of the region’s most striking natural landscapes. Inverewe Gardens offers a remarkable contrast, with exotic plant life thriving on Scotland’s Atlantic coast, while scenic viewpoints around Gruinard Bay provide beautiful opportunities for photography and quiet appreciation of the landscape.

Where time and interest allow, a visit to a small local distillery or craft producer may also be incorporated.

This route is particularly well suited to guests who enjoy nature, photography and gentle exploration.

Northbound Route

Castles, coastlines and iconic Highland scenery

Heading north takes you into some of the most dramatic and historic landscapes of the Northwest Highlands.

Possible stops include Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve, where accessible viewpoints and interpretive displays reveal the extraordinary geology of the region, and Ardvreck Castle, whose ruins stand on the shores of Loch Assynt and offer a powerful connection to Highland clan history.

Further west, Achmelvich Bay provides an unexpected sweep of white sand and clear Atlantic water, while Lochinver and the surrounding coastal viewpoints reveal spectacular combinations of mountains, lochs and sea.

This route is ideal for guests drawn to history, dramatic scenery and the classic landscapes of the Highlands.

Two Ways to Experience Your Ullapool Shore Excursion

Every Ullapool shore excursion is private and hosted with the same care and attention to detail. Guests can choose the level of advance organisation that best suits them.

Standard Private Tour

A flexible, privately guided six-hour shore excursion shaped around your interests and cruise schedule, with any admissions or additional visitor experiences paid separately.

This option is ideal for guests who value flexibility and spontaneity while still benefiting from knowledgeable local hosting and a carefully considered route.

Curated Package

A carefully organised shore excursion where agreed admissions and experiences are arranged in advance.

This option offers clarity, ease and a seamless flow to the day, allowing you to simply step ashore and enjoy a thoughtfully structured Highland experience.

The difference between the two options lies in the level of advance organisation. The standard of hosting, care and attention remains consistently high.

Designed Around Your Time Ashore

This Ullapool shore excursion is designed for guests who want more than a panoramic drive.

It offers space to breathe, time to absorb the landscape, and opportunities to experience the history, scenery and character of the Northwest Highlands at a relaxed pace.

Pickup and drop-off are arranged around your cruise call, with the day carefully planned to allow an appropriate return-time margin before your ship’s departure.

If you would like guidance on the most suitable route or package for your visit, please get in touch. We will be happy to help shape a shore experience that feels personal, effortless and memorable.
