A unique detached cottage right on the shore of Loch Sunart - a Highland sea loch on the west coast of Scotland. It’s in the small settlement of Laga on the beautiful Ardnamurchan Peninsula near the Western Isles.
Large windows and patio doors face south with stunning views of the loch and the Morvern Hills beyond. There's a choice of rooms to relax in and enjoy the scenery or watch out for wildlife.
The spacious accommodation is light and airy. The dining/sitting room and separate TV room have patio doors leading on to a stone terrace with a seating area overlooking the loch.
All 3 bedrooms also have lovely views over the bay and hills. The main bedroom has a king size bed, and the second double bedroom has a double bed, while the single bedroom has a full size single bed. There are two colourful bathrooms, both with baths and showers - one a wet room with a rain shower. There is also a separate WC and a laundry area.
Outside, the large fenced south-facing garden slopes down to the shore with 30 metres of sea frontage, and the hillside above includes a sessile oak, rowan and holly woodland.
The pebbly beach is an ideal base for fishing and boating and there's a variety of fish and sea creatures to find in the rock pools and under the sea weed.
Right from the house, watch out for otters swimming off the point nearby and around the pontoons and moorings. Pods of porpoises cross Laga Bay in summer, following the mackerel up Loch Sunart and seals swim in the bay.
You may be lucky enough to see Golden Eagles soaring above the slopes of Ben Laga or Sea Eagles hunting over the bay. Cuckoos call in spring searching for nests in the ancient oak woodland at Laga, and in the autumn rutting stags roar nearby. Dusk is a good time to see the deer - there’s a large herd on Ben Laga - and you may also see a lone pine marten trotting along the road.
Greylag geese are heard calling most days at Laga as they feed by the shore and rafts of eider ducks feed on shellfish in the bay in the spring. Islands nearby support colonies of breeding sea birds and seals.
Scenic walks to Glenborrodale, Acharacle, Dun Ghallain and Ben Laga start right from the house. Self-drive boat hire and wildlife boat trips are usually bookable from Ardnamurchan Charters, just next door, for a fantastic day out. There are beautiful sandy beaches, an RSPB Reserve, castles to visit and more coastal and hill walks. Several beaches and walks on the peninsula have spectacular views of the isles of Muck, Eigg, Rhum and Skye. You can sample a range of locally produced food from tearooms and take-aways to hotels and restaurants.
You’ll find a wealth of wildlife information at the Ardnamurchan Natural History Visitor Centre, or follow the road to the end of the peninsula – the westernmost point of the British mainland – and visit the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse.
Access: A 100 metre long private track with a handrail winds down a steep hillside from the car park to the house - see photos. The gradient is about 1 in 5 so reasonable fitness levels and footwear are required. The terrain makes it unsuitable for people with limited mobility.
