Fife Self-Drive Road Trip (St Andrews, East Neuk, Coast & Falkland)

Explore the former Kingdom of Fife with a flexible self-guided road trip covering 131 miles of coast, countryside, royal towns and landmarks. Follow the East Neuk Coast, Historic Fife & Forth, and the Heart of Fife, with planning ideas for 3-14+ days

The Fife Self-Drive Road Trip is a flexible self-guided travel guide designed to help you explore the former Kingdom of Fife at your own pace.

Covering 131 miles / 210 km, the route works well as a 3-day road trip, but can also be adapted into a slower 5, 7 or 10+ day journey depending on how much time you want to spend exploring towns, harbours, historic sites, walks and scenic detours.

Fife is compact, but varied. This guide helps you connect its fishing villages, royal burghs, abbeys, bridges, lochs, hills and inland countryside into a clear touring structure, rather than treating them as separate day trips.

The guide is organised around three distinctive landscapes:

East Neuk Coast

Explore Fife’s famous coastal villages and harbours, including Crail, Anstruther and Pittenweem, with opportunities to enjoy fishing heritage, harbour walks, sea views and characterful village stops.

Historic Fife & the Forth

Travel through royal towns, abbeys and historic landscapes around Culross, Dunfermline and the Forth Bridges, linking medieval heritage with one of Scotland’s most recognisable engineering landmarks.

Heart of Fife

Discover the inland side of the kingdom, including Falkland Palace, the Lomond Hills, lochs, countryside views and historic towns, offering a quieter contrast to the coast.

Inside the guide, you’ll find:

  • A structured self-drive route through Fife
  • Flexible planning ideas for 3–10+ days
  • Three main touring areas to help organise your trip
  • Five scenic routes and themed day trip options
  • Ideas suitable for trips starting from St Andrews, Edinburgh or Stirling
  • Narrative introductions to each section
  • Practical route structure to help with day planning
  • 12 months’ access from your selected booking date, so you can choose a date that allows time to plan before travelling

This guide is ideal if you want the freedom of independent travel, but with enough structure to make planning easier. It helps you understand how Fife’s coast, countryside and historic towns fit together, so you can build a road trip that suits your time, interests and pace.
