Scotland Self-Drive West Coast Road Trip: Argyll, Mull & Skye

Explore the West Coast of Scotland with a self-guided road trip covering 480 miles of sea lochs, islands, mountain passes and Atlantic peninsulas. Visit Loch Lomond and Argyll to Oban, Mull, Ardnamurchan, Glencoe and Fort William, over 3-14+ days

The West Coast of Scotland Road Trip Guidebook is a flexible self-guided travel guide through one of Britain’s most dramatic coastal and Highland landscapes.

Covering approximately 480 miles / 770 km, the route works especially well over 7–14 days, but can also be adapted for shorter 3–10+ day trips by focusing on selected sections. Ferry crossings form part of the journey, helping link mainland peninsulas, island landscapes, sea lochs and Atlantic viewpoints into one natural touring route.

This guide is designed to show how the west coast fits together, rather than leaving you to plan separate journeys between distant destinations. It links wooded lochside roads, mountain passes, ferries, islands, beaches, castles and remote peninsulas into a clear route progression from Argyll to Skye.

The guide is organised into four main sections:

Argyll & the Sea Lochs

Travel from Loch Lomond towards Oban, following wooded shores, sheltered sea lochs, castles, coastal roads and classic west coast scenery.

Mull & Ardnamurchan

Use ferries to connect island and mainland landscapes, with white beaches, long peninsulas, remote roads and coastal viewpoints where the Highlands and islands begin to merge.

West Highlands

Explore mountain scenery around Glencoe, Fort William and Ben Nevis, with dramatic passes, glens, lochs and some of Scotland’s most recognisable Highland landscapes.

Isle of Skye

Continue to the Atlantic finale, where the Cuillin mountains, cliff-edged peninsulas, sea views and island roads create one of the most memorable endings to the route.

Inside the guide, you’ll find:

  • A structured self-drive route along Scotland’s west coast
  • Flexible planning ideas for 3–14 days
  • Route sections linking Argyll, Mull, Ardnamurchan, the West Highlands and Skye
  • Ferry-based touring structure to help plan island and peninsula connections
  • Scenic roads, sea lochs, mountain passes, beaches and coastal viewpoints
  • Iconic locations including Glencoe, Mull, Fort William, Ben Nevis and the Isle of Skye
  • Quieter peninsulas and remote landscapes often missed by visitors
  • Narrative introductions to each section
  • Practical route progression to help with day planning
  • 12 months’ access from your selected booking date, so you can plan before travelling

This guide is ideal if you want the freedom of an independent west coast road trip, but with enough structure to make planning easier. You can follow the full route as a longer Highland and island expedition, or explore individual sections depending on your timeframe.

Rather than a rigid itinerary, the guide gives you a flexible framework for shaping the journey around ferry times, weather, walking plans and your preferred travel pace. It helps you experience the West Coast of Scotland as one connected Atlantic journey, linking lochs, islands, mountains and remote roads into a route that unfolds naturally.
