Drive from Edinburgh to the Forth Bridge, Stirling Castle, Linlithgow Palace and Blackness Castle on a self-guided Votura audio tour. Follow in-app navigation, hear stories at every stop and return to Edinburgh at your own pace.
Discover some of central Scotland’s most important engineering, royal and historic landmarks with Votura, a self-guided audio tour app that lets you explore independently using your own smartphone and car.
This driving route starts and ends in Edinburgh. Begin at the Forth Bridge in South Queensferry, then continue to Stirling Castle and Linlithgow Palace before finishing at Blackness Castle on the Firth of Forth. Along the way, Votura combines route guidance with audio stories to help you understand the places you are seeing.
The tour includes four key locations:
• Forth Bridge – Begin in South Queensferry with views of the Forth Bridge crossing the Firth of Forth. Completed in 1890, this remarkable steel cantilever railway bridge was a major achievement in Victorian engineering and remains an important rail link today. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Scotland’s most recognisable landmarks.
• Stirling Castle – Explore one of Scotland’s grandest historic castles, dramatically positioned on a volcanic crag above Stirling. The site has been fortified since ancient times and became especially important to Scotland’s kings and queens during the 1500s. Visitors can explore the ramparts, Great Hall and Royal Palace, as well as enjoy wide views over Stirling and the surrounding countryside.
• Linlithgow Palace – Discover the impressive roofless ruins of a former Stewart royal residence beside Linlithgow Loch. Work on the present palace began in 1424, and it became an important stopping place for the royal court travelling between Edinburgh and Stirling. It was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots in 1542, and visitors can still see its grand courtyard, royal apartments and famous fountain.
• Blackness Castle – Finish at this striking 15th-century fortress on the shore of the Firth of Forth. Built as a residence for the Crichton family, it later served as a royal castle, garrison fortress, state prison and ammunition depot. From the water, its unusual shape has earned it the nickname “the ship that never sailed”.
