Drive from Edinburgh to the Forth Bridge, Stirling Castle, Linlithgow Palace and Blackness Castle on a self-guided Votura audio tour. Follow in-app navigation, hear stories at every stop and return to Edinburgh at your own pace.
Discover some of central Scotland’s most important engineering, royal and historic landmarks with Votura, a self-guided audio tour app that lets you explore independently using your own smartphone and car.
This driving route starts and ends in Edinburgh. Begin at the Forth Bridge in South Queensferry, then continue to Stirling Castle and the National Wallace Monument before finishing at Blackness Castle on the Firth of Forth. Along the way, Votura combines route guidance with audio stories to help you understand the places you are seeing.
The tour includes four key locations:
• Forth Bridge – Begin in South Queensferry with views of the Forth Bridge crossing the Firth of Forth. Completed in 1890, this remarkable steel cantilever railway bridge was one of the greatest engineering achievements of the Victorian era. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Scotland’s most recognisable landmarks.
• Stirling Castle – Explore one of Scotland’s grandest historic castles, dramatically positioned on a volcanic crag above Stirling. Its strategic setting made it important during the Wars of Independence, while later Scottish monarchs transformed it into a major royal residence. Visitors can explore the Great Hall, Royal Palace and ramparts, with wide views over the city and surrounding countryside.
• National Wallace Monument – Visit the striking tower on Abbey Craig, built to honour Sir William Wallace and his role in Scotland’s struggle for independence. It stands above the fields associated with the Battle of Stirling Bridge, where Wallace’s forces defeated the English army in 1297. Inside, visitors can discover Wallace’s story and climb towards panoramic views across the Forth Valley.
• Blackness Castle – Finish at this powerful 15th-century fortress on the shore of the Firth of Forth. Its long, narrow shape has earned it the nickname “the ship that never sailed”. Over the centuries it has served as a royal castle, garrison fortress, state prison and artillery stronghold, with impressive views across the water towards Fife.
