Start from the centre of Fort Augustus where there’s plenty parking just north of the bridge over the Canal if required. Follow the road up the west side of the canal alongside the lock gates until, at the top, the road turns into a track. Continue along the track parallel to the canal. After about 2 miles the route passes Kytra lock which is a good turnaround point if you want a short trip. Otherwise, continue along the canal for a further 2 miles until the main A82 is reached at Aberchalder. Take a few minutes to explore the old Aberchalder Bridge which crosses the adjacent River Oich before returning by the outward route.
