This is the Buchan Area of Aberdeenshire Council. Buchan means the land at the end of the ocean. The coastline itself is varied with long sandy beaches and steep, bird inhabited cliffs. Farming and fishing is the mainstay of the local economy. The rich agricultural lowlands are sparsely populated and are in striking contrast to the bustling coastal towns and villages.
This route provides two options. Complete and full figure-of-eight circuit, or take a short journey to Bonnykelly from New Pitsligo or a longer journey to New Deer.
Stop and have a look at the Hill of Culsh Monument. The 80ft (24m) Culsh Monument, erected in 1876 in memory of William Fordyce MP for Brucklay, Aberdeenshire's first MP.
